About the Author
ABOUT THE EDITOR Nancy Krieger, a social epidemiologist, is Associate Professor in the Department of Society, Human Development and Health at Harvard School of Public Health; Associate Director of the Harvard Center of Society and Health; and cofounder and chair of the Spirit of 1848 Caucus of the American Public Health Association. Krieger received her Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1989. Her background includes biochemistry, philosophy of science, and the history of public health. She also has 20 years of engagement in issues of social justice, science, and health. Her work focuses on the etiology of, monitoring of, and theories to explain population distributions of disease and social disparities in health.

I'm with a company called Schedulefly, and restaurants are our customers. When one of my business partners and I decided that we'd like to open a restaurant one day and began outlining a concept, we realized that as cool as that sounded, we didn't know what it takes to be successful in such a tough industry.  We decided to start interviewing restaurant owners to find out how they do it.  The interviews were so full of great advice and wisdom, we knew we needed to find a way to share them.

A Bible to Starting and Running a Successful Business, Restaurant or Not

Most of the so called "entreprenurial" books are filled with rhetoric from an author describing how he or she started a successful company. Most also contain a lot of what I like to call "fluff" and cliched advice. This Gem "Restaurant Owners Uncorked" contains e)none of the above.

The author of this book is a skilled Software entrepreneur (First Research, ScheduleFly), but admirably and humbly never touts his own experiences or opinions. Instead, through brilliant open-ended and consultative questioning, Wil Brawley guides 20 other successful restaurant entrepreneurs down an exciting path in which they each share tactical advice and nuggets that any business executive will learn from (including myself). Each chapter is it's own journey including do's, dont's, and what it takes to win. If you are thinking of starting any business, this book is a must read. BEWARE - Once you begin it's impossible to put down, except to run and grab a highlighter or jump online and purchase more copies for your colleagues.

Direct answers to real time small business dilemmas

I followed the creation of this book through the weekly posting of excerpts that the Schedule-fly website Blog provided. As a small business owner NOT in the food industry I was initially surprised by the common sense approach and situational similarities my business experience shared with these folks being interviewed. I have a couple of friends that have started coffee shop and cupcake stores recently so I was excited to share this read and great insight with them. The pressure of location to hiring the right people to getting new folks through the door and then making sure they come back because they feel you have set yourself apart from the other choices that consumer has are difficult... To see these owners with such different backgrounds and approaches answer the important start-up questions unscripted reassured me in some areas and told me where we need to improve in others. Definitely recommend this book for all small business owners who like to think outside the box..

Absolutely amazing

As someone who's been in the industry for a bit but just about to open their first spot, this book is absolutely amazing. It's not something written by some consultant who was indispensable to the growth of Applebee's or a professor who's done a study of 300 restaurants but hasn't opened one himself.

This book talks to a wide variety of owners, in a wide variety of market-types, and comes away with so many great things to keep in mind as you delve in to the world of restaurant-opening and operating. You get candid conversations with owners about how they succeeded and what exactly they screwed up (and you can avoid it yourself).

The book is done in interview form so it's not an author's interpretation of what they thought was the owner's most important information. To the contrary, the weakest part of the book is when the author does a few short "key points" at the end of each interview to give you the takeaways. Take those or leave 'em, you'll probably get something different than he did.

If you have a restaurant book library, this needs to be in it. If you only read 3 books before you open a restaurant (please read at least 3), then this needs to be one of those 3.

"She has a f***ing date ... and it's NOT with me!"

What a fantastic quick read and beginning of a new series!! You have four ex-Army Rangers who have served together overseas and come home for some terminal leave (R&R) before their time in the service comes to an end.
This first story in the series is about Eva & Bowie. Eva served with the same company in Afghanistan as Bowie and his friends. They were both physically drawn to the other even then, but each knew they couldn’t take it anywhere while serving in the middle of a war zone. But as far as Bowie is concerned, all bets are off now that she’s a civilian & he’s on his way to being one. But Eva is bound and determined not to end up like her mother … missing out on her life-long ambition of a career. And careers and climbing the promotion ladder don’t leave time for having a mate.
However, Bowie’s lion & Eva’s jaguar know what the score is – they are mates! The resulting pursuit is hot and steady! This is a grown-up read with all the sexiness and steamy situations anyone would enjoy.
As usual, Tabitha Conall gives us a great read, with plenty of back story and character development, for a most entertaining series. Her writing style and clean editing make an exceptionally enjoyable reading experience!

You’ve seen mine, I want to see yours.

HOLY SHIFT! There is NOTHING MINOR about this story!! What a FURRIFICLY ROAR of a read!! I thoroughly & immensely enjoyed it! I always want my stories to be longer, regardless of how long they are but I don't know if I could have survived this one if there was more to it! Tabitha sure has a way with words which is one of the many, MANY reasons that I love her books, and this one is no exception! She has packed so much into this one short story so that every little part of it is entertaining, which sometimes in a short story, there isn’t room for everything and for it to fit well. Tabitha is able to not only make it entertaining, but she also does it in such a way that you don’t even realize that is was a short story! I quickly fell for Bowie and loved that the story was more “his” story. It seemed to add another dimension to the reading pleasure. I loved the humor! So many times I giggled, snickered, snorting or chuckled! Take this for example: Somewhere in the back of his mind he realized he was being completely irrational, but that little voice was so small he could barely hear it. Now THAT was a “snort” moment! To me, that says a lot about how gifted Tabitha is! Not every author can write a story that is as enjoyable, as engrossing and as rich as this one is, never mind if it is a short story or a full length novel! Too many times with the short stories I am left wondering what the whole point was or why I bothered even reading it! But not this one!! Tabitha has truly amazed, wowed and impressed me with A Minor Shift and with just how PUUURRFECTLY PAWESOME it is!! I cannot wait to read the rest of this series! Tabitha has me totally cativated and that's no lion!! (Did you see that cover! Talk about drool-worthy!)

JUST A COUPLE OF UNDERDEVELOPED CHAPTERS THAT DID NOT ENTICE ME

I realize that this is a extremely short introduction to the main characters in order to entice the reader to follow this series but it really failed with me, because:
There was nothing to draw me to care about the characters as they were merely introduced rather than developed.
There was no real heat, no build up of suspense, or of world building, just -
My mate
She's scare that mating will interfere with her FBI job
We'll make it work - let's have sex and mark each other
Oh by the way - I have to get my mother out of a bad place
The end - to be continued

That was it. While there was no misspellings or wrong word usage, there was also no development of characters, the world they live in, or the plot. More of a very bare outline of a story. While the author maybe capable of writing, I am very leery that she can write a fully developed series. It would have been more convincing if she had spent more time developing the characters and setting up the suspense in the 1st book in the series to entice the reader to keep returning to find out more about what happens to them. As it stands now - I don't care about the characters or if they ever get their HEA. This came off as more of a couple of underdeveloped first few chapters that I fear are going to continue with more underdeveloped chapters.

About the Author
Dana Claxton is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist of Lakota Sioux descent. Her work includes film and video, installation and performance art, and centres on concerns of beauty, justice, autonomy and spirit. She is represented in public collections, has been shown internationally, and has received numerous awards including the VIVA Award from the Doris and Jack Shadbolt Foundation for her commitment to contemporary art in Vancouver; and in 2007 became an Eiteljorg Fellow sponsored by the Ford Foundation. She has held positions as Adjunct Professor at Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Vancouver; Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver; 2009/10 Ruth Wynn Woodward Endowed Chair in Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby; and was a founding director of the Indigenous Media Arts Group, Vancouver.

Old, but still helpful

This is a clear, useable introduction to basic techniques for numerical optimization. It addresses the classic kinds of optimization targets: differentiable (mostly) and unimodal (mostly), with or without constraints of various kinds.

Maybe that sounds a little naive and optimistic by today's standards. It still describes a large class of useful problems, though, and may help with end-stage refinement of local optima found other ways. Even genetic optimization algorithms can benefit from classical techniques - a Lamarckian mutation operator may actively seek local improvement instead of relying purely on random perturbation.

Gill covers a variety of techniques, using the first or second derivatives or discrete approximations. He also presents a simplex technique, not to be confused with the simplexes used in linear optimizations. Throughout, he puts strong emphasis on numerical stability and on the relative strengths and weaknesses of each approach, all the way back to the linear systems that approximate each step of the analysis.

It's not a recent book, but that is part of its value. Many of its techniques are almost lost. They have been included by specialists into canned analysis tools, hidden from sight, and forgotten even by the people who use them. I often need to go back to these basics, and very few more recent books are as clear or complete, over this book's range of topics.

Gill has written clearly enough for a careful programmer to implement the algorithms. There is not much here for theoreticians or cut&paste hackers, but it's a useful reference for someone willing to put the time into understanding.

Was good in its day

After some initial use, this book sat unused in my library for many years. We were reacquainted recently when I needed help in solving a nonlinear optimization problem with some tricky aspects.
Rather than being a cookbook of optimization algorithms, it is a thoughtful text about optimization problems and the algorithms used to solve them written by experienced researchers who contributed algorithms for the renowned Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG). It leads one through the classification tree of algorithms (much as you'd do at, e.g., NIST's Guide to Available Mathematical Software), but with chapters and sections devoted to each category or subcategory so you can fully understand the approach and its behavior in detail. This book therefore complements the more typical algorithm- and package- (e.g., Matlab) oriented treatments.
Strengths: a) Good comparisons of similar methods with advice on when to use each. b) Nice discussions, brought alive by many graphs and simple but subtle example problems to illustrate each algorithm and its idiosyncracies.
Weaknesses: a) Sections don't stand alone. I found myself flipping back to early chapters where certain formalisms are introduced. b) The book is dated. The 70's approaches to solving a constrained problem by using penalty functions with a series of unconstrained optimizations have largely been supplanted by new methods based on the Kuhn-Tucker equations. c) There is no coverage, obviously, of other important modern techniques (simulated annealing, genetic algorithms, neural nets) developed after the book was written in 1981.
In summary: It was good in its day, and may still be helpful in understanding the classic algorithms and choosing the best. You'll need to look elsewhere, however, for a modern treatment.

old but still good book

This book is really good to read and gives a great overview and discussion of (by then) important techniques for unconstrained/constrained optimization methods together with a lot of practical eye-openers. It covers a lot of different variants and their interrelation and thus helped me tremendously to understand and structure the field. Does not contain code.
Still my favorite book on nonlinear optimization.

worth the quick read

this is an 624 page long and think book which presents MOSTLY asset relocation (peggy bank accounts stealing), fraudulent checks writing, fraudulent checks writing with lavish spending lifestyles on the side, fake accounts, fake payments, CEO high living fraud, gambling fraud..etc..only presented 5 cases of earnings management (creative accounting)...if one is interested in more details on creating accounting, this other book might interests you called Financial Shenanigans..afterall, this book is so so..[...]
