HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--should be required reading for every American so they have a better understanding of our neighbors to the south. I bought this when I first met my wife who is from Mexico. I found it very enlightening and worth every cent. It's easy to read since it is not in-depth, however, it is still very enlightening. It talks about real Mexico and real Mexicans--not the life and culture that surrounds resorts. It may need to be updated (10 years old) cause the youth in Mexico are greatly influenced by media (TV, movies, etc) today just as American youth are--however, it still provides great insight of where Mexicans are coming from.

I traveled to Mexico with Dr. Heusinkveld as a participant on one of her study abroad trips to the city where she wrote the book. I soon found out that not only is the book a must read for anyone interested in visiting or doing business in Mexico, but that the information that was published over 10 years ago is still very accurate in much of the country.

The book is a very easy read and not long at all. Its small size is very deceptive because the book is crammed with information that one should not go without.

Do not travel to Mexico without this book.

There'd be less misunderstanding if more of us read this gem

I've read and re-read this short book, and it has helped me tremendously to understand Mexico and Mexicans. Their culture is different enough from ours that our habits don't always work.For example, in the chapter on manners, the author points out that people often thank shop clerks when leaving a store. I tried this on a recent trip and discovered that it could lead to enjoyable short conversations.
Published in 1994, I found it very timely in 2003.

About the Author
Janet E. Gardner (PhD, University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is Associate Professor of English at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where she teaches courses in drama, British and world literature, and writing. She has published numerous articles, reviews, and chapters on contemporary drama, especially modern British drama and the work of Caryl Churchill. She has received several grants and awards for research into current teaching technologies, and is at work on a study of drama and theatre pedagogy. Beverly Lawn (PD, SUNY-Stony Brook), Professor of English Emerita, taught introductory fiction courses at Adelphi University for almost three decades. She is editor or coeditor several literature anthologies, including Literature: A Portable Anthology, and is also the author of Throat of Feathers, a book of poems. Jack Ridl is Professor Emeritus of English at Hope College where he taught courses in literature, essay writing, poetry writing, and the nature of poetry for thirty-five years. He has published six volumes of poetry and more than two hundred poems in some fifty literary magazines; his most recent collection, Broken Symmetry, was selected by the Society of Midland Authors as one of the two best volumes of poetry published in 2006. His chapbook Against Elegies received the 2001 Letterpress Award from the Center for Book Arts. His recognitions for teaching excellence include the Hope Outstanding Professor-Educator award at Hope College for 1976, the Michigan Teacher of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation in 1996, and the Favorite Faculty/Staff Member award at Hope College in 2003. For Bedford/St. Martin’s, with Peter Schakel he coedited Approaching Poetry (1997) and 250 Poems (2003); and he is coeditor with Janet Gardner, Beverley Lawn, and Peter Schakel of Literature: a Portable Anthology (2004). Peter Schakel, Peter C. and Emajean Cook Professor of English at Hope College, has published numerous scholarly and pedagogical studies on Jonathan Swift and C. S. Lewis; with Jack Ridl, he has coedited Approaching Poetry (Bedford/St. Martin's, 1997) and Approaching Literature (Second Edition, Bedford/St. Martin's, 2008).

Excellent!

Easily the BEST English text book I've had. The short stories are actually interesting, and many of them are classics. What I like most though, is that the book dispels the myth of "hidden meaning". English isn't about finding some hidden meaning in a text because for the most part hidden meanings don't exist. Instead, it asks you to create you own meaning/argument and teaches you how to support that with the written text.

Writing about Literature is the last section

I was very upset that I bought this book along with Reading and Writing About Literature: A Portable Guide....The entire portable guide makes up the last chapter of this book. However, Amazon made it so easy to return the smaller book that I must give their Customer Service a FIVE. For now, this book gets a four....when I'm done reading it, I will consider changing my rating. I like the parts that I've read thus far.

Klingmann argues that architecture can use the concepts and methods of branding--not as a quick-and-easy selling tool for architects but as a strategic tool for economic and cultural transformation. Branding in architecture means the expression of identity, whether of an enterprise or a city; New York, Bilbao, and Shanghai have used architecture to enhance their images, generate economic growth, and elevate their positions in the global village. Klingmann looks at different kinds of brandscaping today, from Disneyland, Las Vegas, and Times Square--prototypes and case studies in branding--to Prada's superstar-architect-designed shopping epicenters and the banalities of Niketown. But beyond outlining the status quo, Klingmann also alerts us to the dangers of brandscapes. By favoring the creation of signature buildings over more comprehensive urban interventions and by severing their identity from the complexity of the social fabric, Klingmann argues, today's brandscapes have, in many cases, resulted in a culture of the copy. As experiences become more and more commodified, and the global landscape progressively more homogenized, it falls to architects to infuse an ever more aseptic landscape with meaningful transformations. How can architects use branding as a means to differentiate places from the inside out--and not, as current development practices seem to dictate, from the outside in? When architecture brings together ecology, economics, and social well-being to help people and places regain self-sufficiency, writes Klingmann, it can be a catalyst for cultural and economic transformation.

The principle behind this book is that buildings aren't just buildings, but rather iconic symbols that reflect who we are as people, cities and economies-in that sense, they represent a "brand" of sorts. Carrying that logic several steps short of its logical conclusion, architect and writer Klingmann looks at the "brandscapes" that cityscapes have become: "As a strategic tool for eliciting a relevant experience, architecture has an immediate impact on social relations and economic transactions... What counts in a building is not so much how it looks but how it comes to life for people." The problem with these and other statements throughout is that they come off as either vague or self-evident (perhaps as a result of her immersion in the subject-she's the founder of a New York agency "for architecture and brand building"). There is no doubt that Klingmann has passion and knowledge to spare, and that the general idea behind the book is valid, but esoteric, faux-academic writing ("The equation of Experience = Drama + Diversity + Detail can be discerned in the Parthenon almost as clearly as it can in contemporary commercial structures") too often substitutes for well-developed argument and clear-headed analysis. 100 illus.

The topic of this book is extremely entertaining. As any reader can
imagine from the title, it's about landscapes as byproduct of branding.
Well known recent projects in the US (few Europe) by star architects are
analyzed in the context of city branding, museum branding, and corporate
branding.

Branding has been out there for long time, but what's particularly
interesting in recent phenomena (gist of this book) is that the
architecture (or formation of its process) is used as a vehicle to
branding. Klingmann was able to pull together diverse discipline groups
and abundant resources to make that claim.

Another major voice in the book is about "Experience Economy." Basically,
how product developers and brand strategists have evolved their nature of
products and point of advertisement into consumer based satisfaction.
That in mind, Klingmann pulls together solid evidence of the
architectural role.

Good books tend to be either extremely informative or imaginative.
Reading the book, I had pleasure of doing the latter. Branding, in my
mind, at the basic level comes down to "art of seduction" or "art of
persuasion", dealing the issues of contemporaneity. There are probably
gazillion different veils to seduce, Klingmann's book does not focus on
one particular way of seducing. The real strength of the book, hence is,
its open-endedness to imagination.

A classic poker book for temporarily low stake players

This is not really a book about "crushing" low stakes poker, a more accurate title would be "harvesting the low-hanging fruit" in low stakes poker. This is not a criticism, the author needs a more dramatic title to sell books. But he makes his attitude clear. Early on, he advises readers to only select games with fish, and to unparticipate if good players join later. A player who can crush the game should at least hold his own versus good players, and would want to defend his hunting grounds when he finds a good game. But it's safer to go away and look for easier pickings. The book repeatedly advises folding hands with positive expectations, or checking when you are ahead, because you'll have better opportunities to make money later. He tells you how to exploit what the other players are doing, not how to bend them to your will.

If you want to make consistent money at low stakes Sit 'n Gos (buy ins around $10), this book tells you how to do it. It's clear and authoritative, and the author is experienced. It goes into detail about software to use, bankroll management and other essential elements. It really is all you need (some of the elementary information is in appendices). It's short and easy to understand, even for a beginner.

Nevertheless, I don't recommend this book if your goal is to make a few dollars per hour in on-line poker. A minor reason is game availability and edge potential in low stakes Sit 'n Gos has declined quite a bit since this book was written. The major reason is the book is too good for such an easy goal. It doesn't just tell you how to beat low stakes games, it teaches you why things work. This is extra work you don't need if you're never venturing out of low stakes. Moreover the reason people lose at low stakes poker is not that no one ever told them how to play better, it's either that they don't want to play better, or are not capable of playing better. If either of those two things are your problem, this book will not help. It's not a rah-rah halftime speech to inspire you, it's basic poker knowledge.

I recommend this book for people who want to become successful poker players. Assuming you've mastered ABC poker, perhaps by playing with a good computer simulator, this is a good second step. If you can win consistently, you can play profitably. The longer you play, the more money you make and the better you get. Eventually you'll be good enough to move up in level. It's much harder to improve if you start at a higher stake level. For one thing, you will have to pay to learn instead of getting paid to learn. For another, you will be experiencing losing play, not winning play and at the beginning of your poker education learning how to win is more important than learning how to lose. But the most important reason is the game is simpler at low stakes so you can master it . At the top levels of poker, almost any decision is justifiable, because complex deception is necessary. But if you start trying to imitate top pros on television you'll miss all the fundamentals you need to play good poker.

The key aspect that makes this a classic poker book is the author has managed to teach the basic concepts of a mid-stakes game in a logical way, while pointing out the parts you should discard at low stakes. For example, he gives a sound explanation of continuation bets, not just what they are but why you make them, and then explains why the reasons do not apply at low stakes except for made hands. He discusses the concepts in general, then illustrates them with hands. What this means is you are not just learning a mechanical system, making yourself into a poker bot, you are beginning the process of learning the game: starting simple, but doing it right. You won't learn any bad habits, but you'll learn enough to make practice both profitable and fun. It's kind of like when you get good enough at an instrument to play a recognizable song you enjoy, or good enough at a language to have a rudimentary conversation or understand a television soap opera; from that point on you can learn by doing because the skill is enjoyable to exercise. We all learn much faster and much better that way than we do by rote or cogitation.

The people who will benefit from this book are the people who can learn. Learning is the secret, not memorizing lots of rules. If you have a reason for everything you do in poker, you soon notice if the reason was right or wrong. If right, you build on it. If wrong, you discard it. It may take a while, but you will get good. If you have no reason, even if you've started with all the right rules, you won't learn, because you can't tell if you were right or wrong. You'll have lots of bad beat stories, and the hands you boast about will be lucky misplays, but you'll never be a consistent winner.

The people who can learn and have the ability to take advantage of this book are not going to stay in low stakes forever. Not in poker. Not in life.

Excellent value, a Poker mini Bible

This is a comprehensive guide for both newbies and intermediate players. In it you'll find the right mix of foundational concepts and game analysis. It's not that hard to make money on low stakes poker, as long as you're prepared. This book presents some prudent strategies for avoiding the most common mistakes beginners often make.

Instead of just presenting a list of rules, the book dissects several scenarios with detailed post game analysis, (you can almost see yourself at the table).

The author presents several classic poker plays including the Sit and Go endgame system. If you're able to master even one or two of these plays you'll be way ahead of the average player.

If you're serious about poker, you'll find yourself coming back to this book. Excellent value considering the ton of content you'll find in this guide.

Worth a read

I was shocked how valuable this book was. I've been very disappointed with free Kindle books in the past, but this was very helpful. It's modern and explains contemporary SNG meta-game including programs you should use to get an edge online. You should still read Ed Miller's small stakes books to get a more comprehensive understanding, but pick this one up too and you won't be disappointed.

A "Must Read" for all Vaisnavas

I received the printed version of this book as a gift a year ago and put it in my bookshelf for future casual reading. I thought it would be more of the same that I have heard or read in my past 36 years practicing Vaishnavism. I took the book off the shelf to browse because a friend borrowed my current book without permission. So, I was looking for "next book".

I glanced through the table of contents and found a chapter that caught my interest. After reading it, I couldn't put it book down. I then chose another chapter and found it even more informative.

This book is more of a reference than a biography. You don't have to read each chapter sequentially. The first volume does give an in depth biography. The other volumes supplement the biography with studies on Srila Bhaktisiddhanta's preaching strategies, devotional practices, biographies of prominent disciples, and more.

The philosophical understanding of practicing Vaisnavism and spreading the culture is clearly defined in this book. After all, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta is the achraya who firmly established the practices of Gaudiya Vaisnavas in the early 1900's.

I have added to my wish list the desire to read a book about HDG AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada written by HH Bhakti Vikasa Swami in this same format and presentation. There are many personal reflections written by prominent disciples of HDG along with the BBT Biography and the books written by His secretaries. But, none take the approach used by Bhakti Vikasa Swami in his Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Vaibhava.

I will include this ebook in my electronic copy reference collection.

Epic Contribution to Vaishnava Culture IMHO

I've been wishing someone would write an in depth book about Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati for many years as so many people have wished. 2200+ pages of complete out of this world nectar, IMHO. As someone else said on their review this is a book, a maha maha book that I will relish for the rest of my life. I love all of Srila Prabhupada's books but I like reading about Srila Prabhupada even more than reading his books. These transcendental personalities are so amazing, aren't they? It doesn't matter how many times you read of their pastimes you are more amazed every time you go back.

There should be an entire college or colleges dedicated to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati's work. It would be the most extraordinary sin to not preserve the legacy of his pastimes and Bhakti Vikasa Swami has made an incalculable contribution by his painstaking effort to discover as much as he possibly could about Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati and to deliver the information in such a thorough and thoughtful manner. There is also a wealth of pastimes that I have not read of telling details about Bhaktisiddhanta's relationship with his Paramahamsa father Bhaktivinoda Thakura and his Paramahamsa guru Gaura Kishora das Babaji

FIVE STARS!!!

Fantastic introduction to JavaFX 8! Herbert Schildt does a great job of explaining each concept thoroughly. I never felt lost or unable to understand the code, and was rather impressed with his easy to follow teaching style. As a self-taught, beginning programmer, I appreciate authors that really break things down and spell them out completely. This book exceeded my expectation!

Do keep in mind that this is an introduction to JavaFX 8. You will learn the skills necessary to write solid, well organized, good looking GUI's, but, as the title suggests, there is more to JavaFX 8 than this book covers. Schildt does a good job of pointing you in the direction of areas to continue your development, but it will be up to you from there. This book is a solid reference for the basics, but do not expect it to be a complete reference for all the "bells and whistles" that JavaFX 8 has to offer. That being said, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to build a strong foundation with JavaFX 8.

Schildt once again nails it on this Java text. I found the introductory chapters clear and concise in their content and instruction. I recommend this book to anyone interested in JavaFX 8.

doesn't seem like an "Introduction" to JavaFX

This review will not say verified purchase because I purchased it from my Sister's Amazon account,
However I assure you all that I have indeed received a copy of this book.

I am a novice Java programmer and decided to get this book and go ahead and learn
how to develop java GUIs while I learn the Java language. I also have a copy of Herbert's
"Java: A Beginner's Guide" and I must say that I really enjoyed the book because for the
most part it is a nice introduction into the Java language. Author doesn't "Talk Over" the head
of his reader in that book.

However I must say that this book is a different story.

As I started reading ch.1, I noticed that Herbert assumes knowledge on several Java
topics and pretty much glosses over what he probably considers "common sense"
information. However by the time I made it to chapter 2, I was so discouraged
that I am currently debating even reading the book until I can get a rudimentary understand
of JavaFX.

It seems as if the book is written as a "Refresher" to someone who is already privy to the
AWT/SWING/JAVAfx style of programming and not for someone who has NEVER worked with
a Java GUI before.

I followed right up until the "Nodes" Section, from that point throughout the rest of chapter 1,
I was crucially confused.

I will hold on to this book for future reference, However I think I will try "JavaFX for Dummies"
to get a skeletal understanding of JavaFX. Maybe this will be a future read when I have a bit
more JavaFX experience.
