Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret: The Indian Architecture, by Sarbjit Bahga, Surinder Bahga

Contemporary architecture not only in India but also around the world is indebted to Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, the Swiss-French architects. Le Corbusier has left an indelible mark on the architecture and intellectual landscape of the twentieth century. This book is a pioneering attempt to cover the entire Indian works of these two architects. Besides Chandigarh, it covers Le Corbusier's works at Ahmedabad and also Bhakra Dam at Nangal. It also discusses Pierre Jeanneret's lesser-known projects like Talwara in Punjab; Sundernagar, Pandoh and Slapper townships in Himachal Pradeshl and the Medical College at Rohtak in Haryana. It analyzes even those projects which never saw the light of the day. It examines the full and extraordinary range of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret's ideas which encompass contemporary town planning, innovative use of space and modular standardization. With a rich, explanatory and penetrating text, this treatise is a retrospection of creative aspects, as well as, limitations of their works. This is the most serious appraisal of how these architects overcame all the professional problems and found solutions within the Indian context. Throughout the book, the authors discuss the architectural works of the masters and their impact on the Indian architectural scene. Approximately 56 projects designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret are presented along with almost 40 works of Indian architects which show the influence of their philosophy.

Charecter continuity between RA and BB needs reworking
By Finn
/// Edit: Just to note I have now finished the book with an additional section explaining my feelings after its completion

Ok, so a thing to keep in mind is I'm not entirely finished with the book, only about half way through, but I had some nigglings that wouldn't go away and I felt the urge to share them, so here are my thoughts so far.

The book isn't the best of Flanagan's works, not quite up to the level of previous entries but good and entertaining nonetheless.

My major quibble, as was a case with the latest rangers apprentice book, the royal ranger is that character contradictions are beginning to become woefully apparent. The fact that will in the last book was overpowered by lowly brigands ground my gears to say the least, this one however (mild spoiler) compares the characters of horace and stig, claiming they are on equal footings.... This may seem minor to some, but to me, claims like this need to make sense, and to me, this doesn't. Stig is at most a late teen to early twenty something male, and in this series has been described a capable warrior, nothing more. Yet here he is being called equal with Araluen's Best, literally their best soldier.... Why, it simply serves to discredit horace. Even looking at the challenges the two have faced, horace's opponents have usually been professional soldiers or leaders and he has bested them all. Stigs and the brotherbands in comparison have thus far been pirates, brigands and slavers..... The two just aren't on the same level, nothing about them has previously indicated that this is the case.

Excuse the rant, but stuff like this really detracts from the overall quality of the narrative, having horace be on equal footing with thorn say makes sense, both being their nations premier warriors, but this..... Gah, please don't go bandying such statements around lightly in future Mr Flanagan. I just personally feel that a certain "ranking" is in order when watching or reading any book or film, you wouldn't have aragorn be overpowered by a single orc, or the hulk bested by a normal human in an arm wrestle.... Stuff like that breaks immersion in a heartbeat. Things like Duncan losing his temper for the first time in my memory and over literally nothing, with thorn losing his temper equally quickly and irrationally.... Please take more care with character continuity.

TL;DR The calibre of challenges the herons faced has always been well below that of halt, will and horace etc, thus any comparisons between the two should adequately reflect that.

Anyway, enough on that, as for the rest of it, the story is Ok, dialogue is good. Will say a little too much time is spent with characters and their personal thoughts for my taste but to each their own. The gravitas of the herons challenge is pretty standard for brotherband books thus far, not RA level and that's fine, just hope in future comparisons between the two can reflect that with greater accuracy.

This review has sounded rather negative, and I don't want it to come across that way, I have thus far except for a few frowns over the nonsensical nature of character continuity enjoyed the book, I personally prefer the RA ones so I'm probably a little biased, but on the whole I think it's a good read and if you've like the previous entries then it would be a safe bet to say you'll like this one.

I'll update once I'm don't for a more comprehensive and holistic review.

Edit #1 (abundant spoilers, do NOT read unless you have read the book)

Ok, so I finished the book, and I'll admit things started to improve, with Gilan being slightly better than Stig but slightly worse than Thorn, this fits in with previous titles and is what it should be, though how on earth this now fits in with Horace, God only knows.

I suppose my biggest gripe as perviously stated is the fact that the world that the Herons inhabit has always been a "nicer" one in comparison to the Rangers apprentice one. The price of failure in their case is a lost Skandian treasure, a few slaves etc... In comparison, should the Rangers have fialed, it's the fall of Skandia to the Temujai, or Araluen being overrun by Morgorath/ an invasion from Picta. The qualit of enemies is entirely incomparable as well, expert warriors from Nihon-Ja compared with brigands and bandits. This isnt a criticism for the brotheband books as a whole, they just never seemed as serious which is fine. However, the crew of the Herons suddenly seemed to receive some magical upgrade between Slaves of Soccoro and this title, to have them on even footing with the likes of Gilan say and again, it just doesn't fit. To use some more bad analogies, it would be like having a marine be put in a unit with Navy Seals and have him suddenly perform at or above their level. Or to have St Kilda (think their bad this year?) beat Geelong by 200 points. It just doesn't make sense.

Things like Hal not being surprised at all by thorn CATCHING A CROSSBOW BOLT..... I know he's a legendary warrior bla bla bla, but not even raised eyebrows. Who are these superheroes and what did they do with the Herons?

Things, as I said, did get better, with Gilan getting his moments, though nothing on his hidden movement, still used the standard cloak, small things but still strange. Though I still felt he, and anyone else from the RA was hobbled in their ability, his tactical prowess never really shone through and he often times differed to Thorn, which once again, nonsensical. Each person has their roles, and tactics have always been a rangers strong point. Even in the last book, Gilan was making mistakes that didn't really add up in my head, he just wasn't on the pedestal that he was in RA books, which if anything should be set even higher given this "easier world" It just felt that Flanagan wanted the the characters from both books on at least the same level, if not having the BB crew slightly above, which, apologies for beating a dead horse, is just ridiculous, they have less experience and faced enemies no way close to the same calibre. This is all fine, but it never shone through in this book which really grated on me as any further collaboration between the two series needs to match the standard set here, which is a surprising and to me, illogical one. Hell even Lydia was practically placed on the same level as Gilan.... Her darts may be effective, but they will never be able to match the range of the longbow and even her skill seemed to match Gilan's years of experience with the longbow.... Furthermore, the Duncan scene comes to mind again and just how much of a change that was. We had a down to earth, intelligent and almost modern man, attempting to waive the law for Halt for commit treason by insulting him, then literally going off his nut because the Heron being smaller in size to regular Wolfships, even after having Gilan tell them how it's a fantastic it etc... Then Thorn, just as irrationally, doing the same thing. To top it off, now Thorn is a "confident" because of it. In every RA book to date, Duncan has always been a reasonable man and never once lost his temper like that. Last gripe, again back to stig and Horace, This was the first in the series where I felt that Stig was closely comparable to Horace. The entire character was identical to me, replace every "Stig" with "Horace" and I wouldn't have questioned it, which is annoying. Then we have stig killing rabbits by throwing stones at them.... Just out of the blue, dropped as a casual thing. Unless 10 years, steroids and bionic upgrades have occurred since the last book, then I don't know what to tell you, the Herons as a whole were just magically "better". Anyway, enough negatives, the book was good, humour was there, but the inconstancies came close to ruining it for me.

Second TL;DR, The characters in this book seemed completely different from the characters in all previous works, with the characters from BB receiving a rather major upgrade out of the blue, while the charecters from RA seemed to receive a downgrade

If anyone is reading this, knows John Flanagan, the only thing I ask him to do is sit down with his editors and get a "ranking" straight to avoid these ridiculous scenarios in future titles, because at times I found myself having to put the book down in frustration with some of the inconsistencies. The characters from RA should be superior in almost every way, they are older, more experienced, and cracked far tougher nuts than anything the Herons have accomplished. Nothing wrong again, but it's like following the stories of a special forces soldier/member of the security services (pretty much what rangers are) and regular police etc... Just not operating on the same level. Please don't gimp my childhood heroes for the sake of your new ones John, they deserve better.

Edit #2:

Ok, So I'm not sure if this was directed at me, but another reviewer didn't agree with the differences in the degree of challenge between the RA characters and the BB characters, citing that because they are on a boat, the problems they could face are far more limited in scope. Now whether or not this was directed at me I feel the need to clarify my points as they may have been misunderstood.

I have no problem with the BB world being "easier" than the RA world, and realistically, with there being only a dozen or so people on a ship the challenges that they could overcome will have to be smaller in some degree, I have no quarrel here. I begin to take issue, however, when the worlds begin to blend. We have characters from the RA beginning to blend in with the characters from the BB world, which is great. I just didn't feel they added up. I too am fine with the BB characters and enemies and I agree that the latest antagonists was the series best to date. My point is, as you yourself acknowledge, the challenges of the RA ARE more meaningful than that faced by the Herons, which again is fine, except when the characters from this more "difficult" world begin having just as much if not more trouble keeping up in an "easier" world.

An analogy if you'll permit me. I compare it to a university/college student studying mathematics, they find it challenging, they may sometimes need help with certain problems, but eventually overcome them and graduate (like a story arc). Then to take this graduate and put them in a high school maths class, where they seeming struggle equally if not more with the high school level maths work and even keeping up with some of the "smarter" kids in the class. It just doesn't make sense. This is how I feel with this latest book, that characters like Gilan and Horace (the uni students in keeping with my terrible analogy) have trouble keeping up with characters from the BB (high school students) which I feel is a sever injustice to the RA series.

Excuse any typos and spelling errors, I'm on mobile :)

Thanks for reading

A good book but i have to say not brillient compared to the rest in the series. I think things were a little easy for the Heron's this time around.

That being said the book as always is funny in the right places and keeps us entertained.

Ingvar Transformed
By Arthur W Jordin
Scorpion Mountain (2014) is the fifth Fantasy novel in the Brotherband Chronicles series, following Slaves of Socorro. The initial volume in this sequence is The Outcasts.

In the previous volume, Hal was advising Anders on modifying the rigging on Bjarni's wolfship. They were discussing moving the mast back to keep the bow higher. Bjarni was having doubts about re-rigging his ship. He was also worried about the youth of Hal.

Erak came by on his morning constitutional and asked permission to come aboard. He learned that Bjarni was converting his ship to jib sails. Of course, Erak wouldn't do that to his ship, but approved of others changing to the more efficient sail plan.

Meanwhile, Lydia had gone hunting to get away from Rolland. She had agreed to go to the Hay Harvest dance with him, but decided to avoid him as long as she could. She found an old cabin in the woods and cleaned up the mess.

She went out looking for game, but found signs of a bear. She decided to return home in the morning. That night, she heard something big on the porch. She left at dawn.

Hal also had an encounter with a large animal, but it turned out to be an alpine dog. The dog decided to adopt him. Hal called her Kloof because that was what her bark sounded like.

In this novel, Hal Mikkelson is the son of a Skandian father and an Araluen mother. He is very intelligent and good with his hands. Now he is the skirl -- captain -- and owner of the Heron, the first jib-rigged Skandian ship.

Thorn was a shipmate of Mikkel. After Mikkel's death, he had lost his right forearm in tangled rigging. Without his right hand, Thorn could not use an axe or any other weapon. Now he has several hands made of wood carved by Hal.

Stig Olafson was Hal's first friend. Hal had saved Stig from drowning in a nearby cove. Now Stig is the first mate of the Heron.

Ulf and Wulf are identical twins. They like to swap names to confuse others. They are in charge of the sails on the Heron.

Ingvar is a very large boy, but he is nearsighted, clumsy and very strong. His strength benefits the Heron in various ways. Yet he is rather intelligent.

Jesper and Stefan raise the yardarms for the sails of the Heron. Jesper is a reformed thief and lockpicker. Stefan usually anchors the ship on beaches.

Edvin is the smallest in the crew, but is the cook and medic. He may be the smartest boy in the crew.

Lydia is a girl who likes weapons and hunting. She was saved by the Heron crew and is now one of their team.

Kloof is the Heron dog. She is a very large animal.

Duncan is the King of Araluen. He is passionate, but listens to his advisors.

Cassandra is the Crown Princess of Araluen. Cassie is Duncan's daughter and the wife of Horace.

Crowley is the Commander of the King's Rangers of Araluen. He and his Rangers argue a lot with the King.

Gilan is a King's Ranger of Araluen. He has prior experience with the Heron crew.

Anthony is the Lord Chamberlain of Castle Araluen. He runs the castle

Selethan is an ally of Duncan. He has informed the King of another group of assassins sent to kill Cassandra.

In this story, the Heron is now the Araluen duty ship. They are sailing to Castle Araluen to report to the King. The Heron is late due to their pursuit of the Nightwolf.

When the Heron and her crew reach the Araluen docks, they are met by Anthony. He greets them in the name of the King and invites them into the castle. Gilan and Crowley are also among the greeters. Anthony notices that Ingvar needs a larger bed..

Hal, Thorn and Stig are escorted to the King. Gilan and Crowley go with them. Crowley introduces the Skandians to Duncan. The King asks them to sit and offers them drinks. The King wants them to sail to Arrida.

Duncan has received word of another group of assassins after Cassie. These killers are a religious group on Scorpion Mountain. The King wants Gilan to meet Selethan and learn more about the group.

The King plans to send a troop of cavalry with Gilan, but Gilan objects to this plan. He is used to working alone. Also, the Heron if too small to carry horses.

Meanwhile, Lydia is shown to her suite of rooms. She quickly unpacks her bags and looks around. Then Cassie knocks on her door.

Cassie invites Lydia and the rest of the crew on a hunt. She uses a sling and shot to hunt. Yet she is interested in trying the atlatl and darts,

During the hunt, a man with a turban is sensed by Kloof. He has been hiding behind a bush. The man raises a crossbow and shoots a quarrel at Cassie.

Hal doesn't go on the hunt. He has a talk with Ingvar and learns that the large boy is not happy with his role in the Heron crew. In Ingvar's opinion, his myopia makes him a liability in a fight.

Hal has Ingvar look out the window. He asks the boy to describe the scene. Hal notices that Ingvar squints as he tries to see the objects below. Hal has an idea.

This tale takes the Heron and her crew down the river to the sea. Ingvar is entranced by the sights. The Heron crew keep asking him to identify things along the banks.

Ingvar doesn't seem to be bored by the game. Seeing things at a distance is fascinating to him. Lydia is well pleased by Hal's gift to Ingvar.

Thorn gives Ingvar a voulge as his weapon. The next installment in this sequence has not yet been announced on Amazon.

Highly recommended for Flanagan fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of sea voyages, ship handling, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL EDITION!

An utterly revelatory work. Unprecedented in scope, detail, and ambition.

In Lost Tribes and Promised Lands, celebrated historian and cultural critic Ronald Sanders offers a compelling and ideology-shattering history of racial prejudice and myth as shaped by political, religious, and economic forces from the 14th Century to the present day. Written with clear-eyed vigor, Sanders draws on a broad history of art, psychology, politics, and religion to inform his striking and soundly-reasoned assertions.

Lost Tribes and Promised Lands nimbly zig-zags through space and time, doggedly chipping away at the myopic history of discovery and righteous conquest that has been reiterated for decades by the same ideological forces responsible for centuries of mythological prejudice and racial strife. Placing 14th Century Spanish intolerance (specifically anti-Semitism) as the origins of American racism toward African and Native Americans, Sanders elegantly weaves complex threads of colonial economics, religious exceptionalism, and xenophobia into a heady and often-infuriating thesis on the history of racism.

Finally back in print in a complete and cost-accessible edition (when the book was out of print, demand for this important work was so intense that used copies sold for thousands of dollars). Find out why! Lost Tribes and Promised Lands is a gripping and hegemony-exploding treatise on the history of race in the New World.

The Latin Rudiments by Chuck Silverman, by Mr. Chuck Silverman

The concept of Latin Rudiments began years ago when I had the opportunity to meet and talk with a great drummer, Victor Lewis. Mr. Lewis was visiting a house in Miami where I lived with several other musicians. I noticed that he was playing the clave along with a Cuban radio station. I inquired why he was doing this and Mr. Lewis’ response was that he wanted to get into the rhythms of the music and what better way than to use the backbone of Cuban music, the clave. Mr. Lewis, at the time, was in Miami recording with saxophone great David Sanborn. I must have thought that his playing the clave to understand the music was a good idea because I immediately began to use his idea to enhance my own understanding and appreciation of Cuban music. I don’t remember if Mr. Lewis used any particular sticking. All I remember was that his concept impressed me and started me on my way to developing, literally, hundreds of grooves and exercises which have their roots with Latin and Brazilian music. These ideas, most if not all of them inspired by listening to music and finding interesting rhythmic patterns and developing them further, have nothing to do with technique or applying any particular technique to the patterns. They are inspirations and are meant to do a few things: 1. With the more typical rhythms like clave, cascara, certain Brazilian rhythmic phrases, etc., the Latin Rudiments are there for you to be able to groove within the respective style. It has been my experience that the more you perform and actually hear the respective rhythms being played the more they become part of your behavior and experience. Playing the clave in its many forms represented in this book will allow you to better feel the actual rhythm. 2. When a foot pattern is added, drummers will definitely experience the essence of developing “coordinated independence”. I first read this phrase when I began practicing Jim Chapin’s masterwork, Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer. The concept of coordinated independence is definitely highlighted when foot patterns are added to the Latin Rudiments. There will be examples throughout the book and accompanying MP3s of different foot patterns. My suggestion is to begin all exercises by playing both feet with quarter notes, with a metronome set at the major pulse, be it a quarter note or dotted quarter note = 40 beats per minute (bpm). Tempos can and should be increased as the patterns become more relaxed and natural. “Both feet with the metronome, always” was a direction given to me by my snare drum technique teachers. I feel this is essential to developing what some call an “Inner Clock”. A majority of the recorded examples are played at 40 bpm. Other bass drum/hi hat patterns will be introduced throughout this method. 3. I urge my drum students to be creative. The Latin Rudiments are definitely jumping off points for a creative approach to drumming. There are no rules regarding what you can and cannot do. You are encouraged to explore and be as creative as you want to be. I love the idea of creating generations of ideas; generations away from the original Latin Rudiment. See where these ideas can take you! Many of the exercises herein are played as written and also at double the tempo. You are encouraged to play the exercises correctly and then to increase the tempos. The Latin Rudiments are a fundamental way to get closer to Latin and Brazilian rhythms. They are useful in developing command and control of the drum set. Also, I feel and can attest to the proven fact that the Latin Rudiments can be inspirations for your own creativity. My hope is that you find the Latin Rudiments useful in your own daily practice.

Excellent Method Book
By William D. Mccarthy
Chuck Silverman's book provides excellent material for drummers who need to work on Latin concepts. I believe his concept of Latin Rudiments is an excellent foray into getting the hands and feet coordinated and funky. I am a professional drummer and his ideas have broadened my approach (and some of my students) in my application to the drum kit. Hope to see more of his instructional material in the future..

The Book of Broken Promises: $400 Billion Broadband Scandal & Free the Net, by Bruce A Kushnick

With the FCC’s Net Neutrality decision, (and the legal challenges to follow), The Book of Broken Promises emerges to expose the sad truth about communications services in the U.S and delivers a fact-based history of broadband in America that you were never told about. The third book in a trilogy spanning 17 years, senior telecom analyst and industry insider Bruce Kushnick lays out, in all of the gory details, how America paid over $400 billion and counting, to be the first fully fiber optic-based nation yet ended up 27th in the world for high-speed Internet. While over four million people filed with the FCC to ‘Free the Net’, one thing is abundantly clear— You know something is terribly wrong. Every time you pay your bills you notice that the price of your services keeps going up, you don’t have a serious choice for Internet (ISP), broadband or cable service, or maybe you can’t even get very fast broadband service. Broken Promises is not just about broadband, Net Neutrality, or some cautionary tale. It reveals new damaging facts about the underbelly of our communications providers, AT&T and Verizon, not to mention the cable companies, and why it’s time to restructure communications if we want the future we paid for. Most importantly, Broken Promises answers a fundamental question: How did we get into this mess and what can we do to fix it today? And don't worry; all of this jargon will be explained in plain English. First, Broken Promises thoroughly documents the failure to upgrade America’s networks. Starting in the 1990’s, the companies asked state regulators to grant rate increases and tax perks to pay for replacing the existing, utility copper wires connected to homes and offices, (and schools and libraries), with a fabulous fiber optic future. Though it varies by state, by 2014, over $400 billion was collected, charging you thousands of dollars for services you never got. Alongside this, in 1995, the cable companies cut a deal with the FCC called the “Social Contract” to charge customers for network upgrades and the wiring of schools. While the Contract expired in 2001, the companies never stopped billing and collected about $50 billion extra and there’s no evidence that the schools were wired. And we were all charged about 9 times to wire America's schools & libraries. Adding insult to injury, Congress passed the Telecom Act of 1996, opening the networks to give customers a choice of ISPs and even cable providers. But, by 2005, the FCC reversed this ‘right’, creating Net Neutrality issues. Also, the FCC allowed the companies to consolidate power, leaving a trail of broken promises from the mergers that created AT&T, Verizon and Centurylink. Broken Promises also details what to expect from the AT&T-DirecTV and Comcast-TWC mergers. In order to keep control, the companies have an army of fake consumer groups (astroturf), paid-off politicians, corporate-funded stink tanks, co-opted non-profits, all coordinated by massive skunkworks networks that use disinformation campaigns. Broken Promises pulls back the curtain and also shines the spotlight on the ALEC/Corporate sponsored deregulation bills from hell and how this game is played. Broken Promises explains all the ‘buzzwords’ and supplies encyclopedic coverage— everything you need to know about the current, critical issues, from Net Neutrality, something called “Title II” and “reclassification”, the "IP transition", the secret ‘special access’ connections, the rise of municipalities who didn’t wait to get wired—or the plan to ‘shut off the copper’. Broken Promises ends with a proactive plan to reclaim our rights and restructure communications by leveraging the companies’ broadband commitments and business practices to bring America’s states and cities very high speed, fiber optic-based utilities that lowers your rates and delivers choices via "Open Network" competition for all services. Isn’t it time everyone got the fiber optic future we already paid for.

About the Author
Bruce Kushnick is one of America’s leading telecommunications analysts and one of the most controversial. If you have used a touchtone phone over the last three decades, odds are he had something to do with it. In 1982, Kushnick predicted that the addition of new technologies would change the way America communicated and he helped to develop numerous services that are now commonplace. As senior telecom analyst for IDC’s Link Resources, he wrote some of the seminal research reports that heralded in the “Interactive Age”. In 1992, he helped to roll out the first three digit information service, “511”, which is now common in many US cities. But in 1992, a visit to his Aunt Ethel’s home made him realize that his clients (that would become AT&T and Verizon) had a dark side. He founded New Networks Institute, (NNI) to document and expose the companies’ plans and excesses. For example, America should have been the first fully fiber optic-based nation as customers paid over $400 billion extra in rate increases and tax perks by 2014 . Instead, the companies diverted funds to overseas investments or the executives’ compensation. In 2002, Kushnick helped to create Teletruth, a telecom advocacy group. Teletruth was a member of FCC Consumer Advisory Committee and helped to create proposed legislation, the Broadband Bill of Rights, a precursor to the Net Neutrality rules. And over the last decade, Teletruth’s phone bill auditing services has led to multiple, successful class action suits and major refunds for phone customers. In 2015, NNI and Teletruth have multiple, active complaints against the phone and cable companies at the FCC and state commissions. Kushnick’s books include $200 Billion Broadband Scandal, which was featured on Bill Moyer’s Emmy-nominated, The Net at Risk, and The Unauthorized Bio of the Baby Bells, with foreword by Dr. Robert Metcalfe (co-inventor of ‘Ethernet’). His work has been featured by almost all major US media outlets and blogs, from The New York Times and Washington Post to Ars Technica and Broadband Reports. Kushnick has had a lifelong addiction to sound and technology. He has a degree in music composition from Brandeis and was a special graduate student at both Harvard and MIT, combining artificial intelligence, psychology and music in a program that would become part of MIT’s Media Lab, not to mention working in MIT’s psychoacoustics labs. An accomplished composer and musician, Bruce has been playing the piano for 58 years.

Don't buy the Kindle edition. The "print replica" format is unreadable. I will be complaining to Amazon.
By Flomar
It may be unfair of me to rate this book, since I can't actually read it on my Kindle app. I only give a rating because Amazon forces me to choose a rating before I can leave my comment here. A low rating would be unfair to the author. My complaint is not with the book's content, but with the lousy format that Amazon has used to "publish" the book. The book is in "print replica" format, which means that the pages are just scanned images of the print version. The format is terrible, unreadable. The text is tiny. Unlike a "real" Kindle book, the book's font size can NOT be adjusted. The only method of making the font larger is to "pan and zoom," which does NOT re-flow text. You can only see a portion of a page at a time. Panning and zooming to read text is incredibly tiring and frustrating. I'm disappointed in Amazon for publishing a book in this LAZY format. They didn't even try. I wont ask for a refund, because I support the author and his cause. But, I will complain to Amazon about the lousy format.

Anyone Can Do It: My Story, by DUNCAN BANNATYNE

At 30, Duncan Bannatyne had no money and was enjoying life on the beaches of Jersey. He saw a story of someone who had made himself a millionaire, and decided to do the same. Five years later he had done it, and now he is worth 168 million. In this remarkable book, Bannatyne relives his colourful path to riches, from ice cream salesman to multi-millionaire, explaining how anyone could take the same route as he did - if they really want to. Hugely articulate, and with numerous fascinating and revealing stories to tell, this is an autobiography and a business book unlike any other - but then Bannatyne isn't like any other businessman, either.

Simple, Basic, Common Sense Way to Make Money
By Dennis Balajadia
I was surprised by Duncan's great ability to tell a story. His story is simple enough that you put down the book (in my case the Kindle) and you feel a bit better, braver and can think clearer.

What I liked about his story is that he wasn't a young, overachieving A-type. He started in his 30s but he made the right moves. It starts with knowing your numbers and knowing what you're doing.

Highly recommended for entrepreneurs!

Really thought inspiring
By Objective observer
What I really liked about this book, amongst all the good tidbits of business experience and an inspiring life story, is the fact it makes plausible that anyone can achieve success if they work at it, regardless of their age. The book inspires and teaches from the experiences of a successful entrepreneur who is clearly not afraid to be open and honest about his life, his shortcomings and how he used them to achieve great success.

There is one other point for which I think the book deserves more than just 5 stars. It reveals to the world the really sad and hidden plight of children in Romania. His account of how children's arms and legs are tied to corners of their cots for the rest of their lives, some gone insane, others so lost in hope they fear a hug, lives spent in sub-human conditions etc. can only bring tears and shock to any parent and right minded person. As detailed, these atrocities were a direct consequence of Romania's earlier rulers, but which persist today hidden from the well rehearsed visits to these institutions by foreigners. And it shows a need for a thousand Duncan Bannatynes making a direct change to these children's lives, getting them out of such subhuman conditions to a real child's life.

For writing this for the world to read and know, I think the book and the author deserve more than 5 stars.

Phenominal Book, could not put it down!
By GPN
"Anyone Can Do It" is an absolute great read for any aspiring entrepreneur and businessperson.

You will be inspired by what Duncan accomplished without any "inside information" (he does admit to reading the newspaper as his secret weapon!), how he went from an Ice Cream truck and having to sell his house (!) to finish the Nursing home, to how he built his empire.

From Library Journal
Readers of Ziglar's other how-to-succeed books will know what to expect: formulas and slogans by the dozen, illustrative anecdotes (often drawn from his own experiences), a few facts of behavioral psychology made easy, and some arrestingly provocative statementsamong them "You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want!" As a rule, success-winning formula books tend to ignore the problems presented by the differences in people's individual capacities, with the result that they too easily assume the practice by everyone of a few simple principles will guarantee success. Ziglar's book is no exception to this rule, but, all things considered, it is a cut above most titles of this kind. A. J. This book reminds me of my most important asset; the people on my team. In the middle of the book are Management Gems. The Gems include formula for Top Managers, Leadership Myths, as well as steps for performance oriented mangagement. These Gems are must reads daily. Thanks for making something so tough, easier to apply.

Excellent book on principle-centered leadership...
By Patrick D. Goonan
I am a fan of Zig Ziglar and I think he exemplifies a model of doing business founded on character and business ethics. He has been very successful himself applying these ideas and true to himself along the way.

This book is basically about how to be a good example and inspire others by living consistent to your values while applying timeless principles to leadership. Like sports, it is often doing the fundamentals really well that leads to tremendous success. For example, look at Tiger Woods. He always returns to improving and grooving the fundamentals.

What makes this book particularly worthwhile is the quality of the story telling, analogies and examples. This helps the principles to land. While this book is simple and straightforward, it's not necessarily simple to apply especially when you get in a difficult situation that tempts you to violate your own principles.

I have been fairly successful in business and worked for more than one Fortune 100 company in different careers. I also had the good fortune of working in Silicon Valley for such companies as Oracle, PeopleSoft and VMware in a variety of management roles. I have tested these ideas in practice and as a result built winning teams. Any of the books I have bought by Zig Ziglar have paid for themselves many times over. I hope you have the same experience.

About the Author

Ben Klemens has been doing statistical analysis and computationally-intensive modeling of populations ever since getting his PhD in Social Sciences from Caltech. He is of the opinion that writing code should be fun, and has had a grand time writing analyses and models (mostly in C) for the Brookings Institution, the World Bank, National Institute of Mental Health, et al. As a Nonresident Fellow at Brookings and with the Free Software Foundation, he has done work on ensuring that creative authors retain the right to use the software they write. He currently works for the United States FederalGovernment.

Essentially without competition, though far from perfect
By Alexandros Gezerlis
The C programming language is alive and well: it is used not only in vast amounts of legacy code but also in new development, often when efficiency is important and the learning curve imposed by C++ is deemed unacceptable. As for the literature on C, the standard high-quality text is the one by Kernighan & Ritchie (K&R), while the "second book" genre doesn't have too many representatives. Peter van der Linden's "Expert C programming: Deep C Secrets" and David Hanson's "C Interfaces and Implementations" are probably the best choices (perhaps supplemented by P. J. Plauger's "The Standard C Library"). However, given that all these books date from the 1990s or earlier, a book on modern C programming was sorely needed.

The Good: Ben Klemens' "21st Century C" is a text that assumes some knowledge of classic C and attempts to expand and update that knowledge. This has allowed the author to write a book that is not too long and can thus be read cover-to-cover. Even though this is not an elementary tutorial, the author has also included overviews of some basic concepts to make sure everyone's on board. The writing is for the most part pleasant enough and sometimes even humorous, e.g. "If you and a friend both have v1 [...] Or, if you have no friends". The code for the complete programs shown in the text has been packaged and is available on the publisher's website. Almost all of these programs are easy to compile and run -- this should go without saying, but unfortunately many books are rushed out too soon. One attractive aspect of this volume is that it contains a grab bag of tips (e.g. a function that takes in a pointer to void should immediately assign that to an appropriately typed pointer) as well as welcome summarizations of related topics, bringing to mind books like "Effective C++" and "Effective Java". For example, chapter 6 includes a useful table that goes over valuable aspects of static, automatic, and allocated storage duration (though Klemens doesn't use the standard terms "allocated" and "storage duration" but speaks instead of a "manual memory model"). A cute trick is given soon thereafter, in the form of a macro to initialize a static variable with a nonconstant value. More good macro material is included in later chapters, leading to convenient string-handling or helping us write functions that take in a variable number of named arguments. In the process of doing the latter, Klemens drives home a fun idiom: first define a struct, then define a variadic macro that puts its arguments inside a struct, and finally write a function that takes in a single struct as input. The main selling point of this text is that it's quite up-to-date, repeatedly mentioning C99 and C11. Importantly, the modern C features are not an afterthought but are used throughout the volume. Even so, chapters 9-12 would be the ones most useful to a reader unfamiliar with tools like strtok_s, designated initializers, the _Generic keyword, and anonymous unions. The last 2.5 chapters also attempt to inch toward programming in the large, with Klemens doing things like implementing a dictionary and using libraries (e.g. GSL and GLib) repeatedly. Speaking of libraries, Part I is dedicated to the modern ecosystem around C and is a charming departure from the language-centeredness of most programming books. Apart from giving basic usage info on debugging, Makefiles, and version control software, Klemens also introduces sleek tools like seq, pkg-config, and screen. One way to test an author's pedagogical skills is to evaluate a section containing material one is completely unfamiliar with. For me that applied to the sections on git rebase and on the variables appearing in Makefile.am; in both cases I felt the selection of topics as well as the explanations were nicely done.

The Bad: I begin by discussing structural problems and then go on to cover detailed issues. Klemens mentions in the Preface that "about a third of this book has almost no C code in it." First of all, Part I takes up 100 pages and Part II 150, so it's not really one third. Second, placing the non-C-specific material first leads to an excessive number of forward references. One example: p. 40 constructs the unit tests for a piece of code, p. 72 shows an Automake file that handles that testing, while the C program itself is introduced on p. 212. A related structural/misplacement issue has to do with Klemens' decision to introduce modern C features in chapter 10 (of 12). This wreaks havoc, given that he has (to his credit) opted to use new entities (like designated initializers and compound literals) throughout the text, even if he sometimes doesn't say he's doing so. Turning now to detailed issues, it's worth noting that the book contains many mistakes which are not just first-printing-typos, but flat-out factual errors. Here are a few examples, all drawn from a small fraction of the book: Klemens says that sources in distutils.core.Extension is "an array", even though it is a list of strings; he alleges that the stack size on Linux is limited to 2 or 3 megabytes -- stating this in apparent ignorance of the existence of ulimit and setrlimit; embarrassingly, the first use of pointers in the chapter on pointers contains at least two mistakes in one line (which is shown twice); he confusedly states that "the syntax for a function type is really a pointer to a function of a given type" -- this would mean that we could have array elements that are of function type, which is patently untrue. In other cases, the writing is slipshod: Klemens mentions "a local variable with static linkage" even though there is no such thing as static linkage in C (there's only external, internal, and none); he devotes an entire section to setting the array size at runtime but fails to note that variable-length arrays became optional in C11 -- later on, he can't make up his mind if such arrays can be initialized or not; he counterposes open to "the POSIX fopen" and refers to a "C-standard get_opt function"; he thinks he's uncovered a contradiction in K&R (just to be clear: he hasn't) but can't even be bothered to make the elementary distinction between declarations and definitions; the catalog of such issues is simply too long. In yet other cases, the text is characterized by plain old poor pedagogy, e.g. he defines list[3] and then talks about &list as if he's already explained what that means (when he's only discussed list and &list[0]). On a different note, we get a chapter on extending Python with C, but almost nothing on the impact of C/C++ feature differences. Bjarne Stroustrup has written an interesting article on C and C++'s "sibling rivalry" (which Klemens does not cite). Speaking of Stroustrup, the bibliography's only reference to "The C++ Programming language" is dated 1986 (presumably meaning the 1st edition). It's also worth noting that the bibliography includes two texts by Scott Meyers that are not cited in this book, but no reference to the volume by van der Linden that is the obvious competition in this niche.

In a nutshell, I liked the premise of the book much more than I enjoyed the execution. It was disappointing to see Part II start out by mentioning "especially complicated pointer setups like pointers to functions" only to repeatedly mishandle them near its end (both in the text and in the code). It should be noted that K&R managed to thoroughly discuss function pointers in one short section. Yes, expecting an author to match the quality of K&R is holding him to an impossible standard. But expecting him to write an authoritative and well-structured second book on C isn't as exacting. All in all, three stars.

Recommended for the self-taught programmer or intermediate programmer looking to fill gaps
By Alan Olsen
[This review was written for the 2014 Second edition.]

I have been programming for about 40+ years now. I learned C from a K&R first edition. Much of the bits of C I learned early on no longer work or are recommended these days. The language has changed, the tools have changed, and my watch has more than 1,000 times the memory of my first computer.

This is a book that gives a good refresher course in C. The author has a good knowledge of the history and structure of the language. He warns of the pitfalls and advantages throughout the book.

The book is not the average dry textbook. The style is light and readable, without being "jokey". I did not get bored with it, as I have with some other books.

The book not only covers C, but the tools needed to write good code. This includes Make, Git, GDB, autotools, and valgrind. (Among others.) It also covers a number of useful libraries that most C books ignore. (It does not suffer from the "here are the basics, fend for yourself" style of book.)

The OSes covered are Windows, Mac and Linux. It includes extra help for Windows and Mac, probably because if you are using those OSes, you will need it. (Linux has a much more complete toolchain for writing C code.) There is some mention of setting up a BSD environment, but much of that is covered in the Mac references. (OS X is BSD.)

The version I have is the 2nd edition. It covers C11 and some newer features of the OS and compilers that C programmers need to be aware of. It does not contain everything you need to know, but if it did it would be more than three times the length. The coding environment has been changing a great deal in the last 5-6 years, especially on Linux. This does not try to cover the OS interface issues such as UDEV or DBUS or the like. It is trying to show you more of the changes to the language, using the libraries as an example, not the changes to the overall libraries.

This is not the only book you need to become a good C programmer, but it is one that you will want to have in your library.

Ignore the curmudgeons and get stuff done!
By J. Austin
It's sort of amusing to read all the cranky one-star reviews of this book: "Why would you need a book? Just read the manpages!" "Real men don't use libraries or Autoconf!" "Go back to Ruby and Python you young whippersnappers!" "I don't like macros!" "Get off my lawn with your rock 'n roll and C11 (and C99)!" Wow, did the author graffiti an old folks' home or something?

Here on Earth, this book does for C what dozens of books have done for more modern languages like Ruby or C#. The book shows an intermediate to experienced coder in other languages how to hit the ground running in C. Since C is not exactly like those "other" languages, the advice isn't and shouldn't be the same as for those. You do have to deal with makefiles, and this book will show you several ways to do so. You can't avoid pointers, so he shows you how without pretending that pointers are deep mysterious difficult voodoo. C is not a "batteries included" language, so this book describes several libraries that you should use rather than e.g. implementing linked lists or Unicode handling from scratch by yourself.

By the same token, it's 2013 and C shouldn't be coded the exact way I was taught at university in 1995. Designated initializers prevent errors and make code easier to read. You don't need malloc() for runtime array sizing. It's fine to declare variables where they're used rather than at the top of the scope. Variadic functions are both underpowered and dangerous, but we can use them productively and safely with intelligently written macros using __VA_ARGS__. You still have to manage your own memory in C, but now there is Valgrind, the use of which this book illustrates clearly in a page and a half. Oh yeah, and we have libraries now, so you don't need to malloc() constantly while handling strings either.

I'm actually surprised none of the one-star fogies complained about all the struct-passing, of which I hadn't seen much before and of which there is a great deal in this book. I mean, if compilers in the 1980s only let you stuff so much on the stack, dooming us to ampersands and memory leaks, why should we acknowledge we have better compilers today? I almost suspect they haven't actually read the book...

It's your loss if my snark offends you. The author of this book is opinionated too. He quotes dissident punk bands with vulgar names at the beginning of chapters. He has specific recommendations for what tools to use and how to use them. In case you need convincing not to hobble yourself with an IDE, he shows you why a decent editor and the command line is better. He doesn't tell you how to use M$ tools because they suck (e.g. they're stuck forever on C89). The dozens of oddball build tools that have cropped up to replace make have failed to do so, and make is demonstrated repeatedly here to show you why.

I love K&R, but the world has changed since 1989, and this is the first C book I've read that realizes that.
