Two's Company, by Jill Mansell

Two's company, but three's a calamity.... Two's Company is a funny, romantic novel from best-selling Jill Mansell, author of The One You Really Want and Three Amazing Things About You.

Jack and Cass Mandeville are a dream couple, ridiculously happy together and successful to boot - Jack as a journalist and Cass with her own hugely popular radio show. Indeed, almost every member of the Mandeville family is famous in their own right: from stunning Cleo, a supermodel with attitude, to Sean, the rising star of the comedy circuit.

Incredibly good looking and likeable, the family have captured the hearts of the nation - and the nation's press. But on the day that Jack hits the big 40 - the same day that a redhead called Imogen turns up to interview Jack and Cass for Hi! magazine - their proverbial bubble is about to burst....

Delightful Brit Lit
By Wendy Kaplan
Jill Mansell is among the best of the current crop of Brit Lit writers, whose fun, sprightly novels are highly talented as well as fun. I order all mine (this is my third) from Amazon, as I can't seem to find them anywhere else, and they are WELL worth ordering!

In this fun offering, Jack and Cass Mandeville, a power couple (she's a radio host, he's a well-known journalist) are as much known for their celebrity and good looks as the fact that their marriage is the happiest in all the UK. And then Jack hits 40. And a midlife crisis seems to hit him between his shower and his first cup of coffee...with disastrous results.

As if that were not enough, their three children, Cleo, a super-model; Sean, an up-and-coming standup comic whose career success is far outweighed by his success with the ladies; and Sophie, a determinedly "different" teen-ager, are all involved in problems of their own. And all of it in the very public eye.

It all makes for a wonderful hodgepodge of romance, satire, humor and a great deal of underlying wisdom as well. Highly, highly recommended.

light entertaining read
By Vanessa
Jack and Cass Mandeville seem to have a wonderful marriage and have three wonderful children. It's Jack's fortieth birthday and Cass has neglected to tell him that she has scheduled an appointment with a journalist for a magazine that morning. She actually forgot. Cass agreed to the interview because she was going to turn her fee for it over to a charity. The journalist, Imogen, arrives for the interview and Cass stumbles down to greet her. Her house is a mess, she just got out of bed, and Jack refuses to participate. In fact he seems to be downright rude to Imogen and he goes off to the gym instead. Cass later invites Imogen to attend an improtu birthday bash for her husband and Imogen shows up later.
Imogen is attracted to Jack and she seems to want everything that Cass has except perhaps her children Sean (a cheating comedienne), Cleo (a model who tests other people's relationships) and Sophie (a 14 year old beauty in hiding). Jack and Imogen run into each other later and give in to their attraction and an affair ensues. A listener to Cass's morning show calls in and spills the beans to her about her husband's extra marital affair. Cass gets upset when she confronts him and later Jack is with Imogen telling her that he loves her. He seems to go back and for the between Imogen and Cass and telling both of them that he loves them. Finally Cass has one last time with Jack, he thinks they had the make-up thing and that he will stay with Cass and finish with Imogen and instead Cass tells him good-bye.
With no other choice Jack goes back to Imogen but he doesn't really seem happy. Cass follows through with a divorce and hooks up with a mutual friend, Rory, who happens to be a bit older than Jack and Cass. Jack doesn't seem to like that two years on Cass seems to be happy with Rory and is talking about the fabulous time she has with him. Imogen is pestering Jack about having children and seeking fertility treatments because she doesn't seem to be getting pregnant. Jack doesn't want any more kids because he has already had three. At a party for Sophie, Rory asks Jack for his permission to ask Cass for her hand and marriage. Jack is not too happy about this. Sophie wants to go to Africa to help out but both Jack and Cass think it is a bad idea because she is only 16. Imogen thinks it's a fine idea and doesn't seem to understand what the problem is. Sophie drops it and takes a job as a model to help earn some money to save up for the Africa trip. Later she is kidnapped and taken at knife point. Cass and Jack come together to wait for news about their daughter. They end up getting together in more ways than one and soon end back up together.
The story didn't seem to explain why in the world Jack hooked up with Imogen to begin with or how Rory went from wanting to marry Cass to not really caring that she dumped him to get back with her husband. There was a lot going on with the storylines of the three kids too that distracted from the so called main characters. Wasn't an incredibly deep book but it wasn't a horrible one either. It was just a light, slightly entertaining read.

Don't Judge the Author By This Book - Others are MUCH Better!!
By Loves Books in MD
A fan of what I call Brit Chick Lit, Jill Mansell is one of my favorite authors. I've read quite a few of her books and have found them all to be entertaining and light good reading. Two's Company was first published in 1996, so perhaps it's one of her early titles or simply not her best work. There were so many characters in this book that I found it rather hard to follow - and most of them weren't very likeable. After the book meandered for an interminable amount of pages, the various plotlines were abruptly brought to a sudden and abrupt conclusion, most of them predictable, if unlikely.

If you haven't read any books by Jill Mansell and are looking for the first one to try, I urge you to consider some of the others such as Staying at Daisy's, To the Moon and Back, Take a Chance on Me, Millie's Fling, Perfect Timing, Rumor Has It, and Miranda's Big Mistake - have all been excellent. I wouldn't judge the author by this book, as I found it not up to her usual standards. Give some of the others a try and I think you'll find them fun and entertaining with endearing characters.

Overall, NOT a good textbook
By Vincent Wong
As a software engineer myself, I found a lot of the text unnecessarily wordy and complicated. In some cases, certain more advanced topics are discussed without more background information, so I can see how a beginner might be totally confused from this book. And to make things worse, several of the examples have typos in them which can make things even more confusing.

Overall, there are many C books that are much better than this, so unless you're forced to buy this book as a textbook for a course, I would definitely not pick this one.

Not impressed
By Kenneth Finnegan
If you want to learn C, this book might eventually get you there, but it felt pretty fluffy. 1000+ pages is a little much for such a simple language as C.

I also was floored to see code samples in the book that have syntax errors and don't compile.

Simple and straight forward
By Luan Vu
I studied from this book for my class two years ago. I thought that the book carefully explains concepts with out being wordy, which lessen the frustrations and uneasiness of learning how to program for the first time. After each major new concept, the book writes an example program. Following the programs are explanations of everything in the program. Why they write this or why use this method, etc. The exercises are helpful. However, if they have a solution guide to go with it, it would had been even better. Overall, this book is great for anyone trying to learn C on their own. It doesn't leave out anything and the concepts are explained in a straightforward and clear manner.

The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine, by Todd Kliman

A rich romp through untold American history featuring fabulous characters, The Wild Vine is the tale of a little-known American grape that rocked the fine-wine world of the nineteenth century and is poised to do so again today.

Author Todd Kliman sets out on an epic quest to unravel the mystery behind Norton, a grape used to make a Missouri wine that claimed a prestigious gold medal at an international exhibition in Vienna in 1873. At a time when the vineyards of France were being ravaged by phylloxera, this grape seemed to promise a bright future for a truly American brand of wine-making, earthy and wild. And then Norton all but vanished. What happened?
The narrative begins more than a hundred years before California wines were thought to have put America on the map as a wine-making nation and weaves together the lives of a fascinating cast of renegades. We encounter the suicidal Dr. Daniel Norton, tinkering in his experimental garden in 1820s Richmond, Virginia. Half on purpose and half by chance, he creates a hybrid grape that can withstand the harsh New World climate and produce good, drinkable wine, thus succeeding where so many others had failed so fantastically before, from the Jamestown colonists to Thomas Jefferson himself. Thanks to an influential Long Island, New York, seed catalog, the grape moves west, where it is picked up in Missouri by German immigrants who craft the historic 1873 bottling. Prohibition sees these vineyards burned to the ground by government order, but bootleggers keep the grape alive in hidden backwoods plots. Generations later, retired Air Force pilot Dennis Horton, who grew up playing in the abandoned wine caves of the very winery that produced the 1873 Norton, brings cuttings of the grape back home to Virginia. Here, dot-com-millionaire-turned-vintner Jenni McCloud, on an improbable journey of her own, becomes Norton’s ultimate champion, deciding, against all odds, to stake her entire reputation on the outsider grape.
Brilliant and provocative, The Wild Vine shares with readers a great American secret, resuscitating the Norton grape and its elusive, inky drink and forever changing the way we look at wine, America, and long-cherished notions of identity and reinvention.

The Wild Vine is a wonder—fun, smart, fascinating, eye-opening. It’s the wine book as a thrilling mystery.

It’s the true story of a man obsessed by a grape: the Norton, invented by a driven American who named the variety he created after himself. Stubborn, ambitious, a product of his time and place, and also a uniquely American inventor, Daniel Norton.

But Norton is just one of the unforgettable characters Todd Kliman brings us. The other is Michael Marsh, a multi-millionaire software guru who glimpses a new life for himself when he takes his first sip of the Norton. That epiphany sends him on a rollicking journey of personal discovery, one that sees him change his sex and establish a winery meant to restore the doctor's legacy.

Beyond these poignant, enthralling stories, The Wild Vine gives you the history of wine-making in America. What’s amazing is that the career of American wineries follows that of America herself; only when growers found the courage to use national varieties—that is, only when Americans discovered their own character of grape—did American wine come into its own.

It’s also the story of German American immigration; of the American viticultural scene (which used to be Missouri!); of Prohibition; even of sexual politics in America.

In captivating prose Kliman relates one of those magical little American stories that illuminate the whole country. And so The Wild Vine is not only a wonderful, strange read; it’s a first-rate American history lesson.

From Publishers Weekly
In this engaging history, food and wine writer Kliman focuses on the Norton, an American grape hybrid, its namesake early 19th-century creator, and its current-day advocate. Going back to the early efforts of American grape growing and winemaking, Kliman assembles a solid biography of the bereaved doctor and amateur horticulturalist whose Jeffersonian devotion to a native American grape and wine eventually led to the birth of a new variety. Despite viticultural progress and recognition, however muted, and his efforts to draw the former president's interest, Norton died without achieving viticultural success and was lost to history. Kliman's narrative discloses the hidden story of the Norton's nurturing over the decades in the Midwest and the role of German-Americans and other immigrants in its survival. Through means and methods like homemade winemaking, the hardy fruit endured blight and Prohibition, and was eventually restored to its native Virginia soil, where the book's other dominant and most colorful personality, a transsexual, was liberated by her physical change to professionally pursue the grape's cultivation. Review
"Kliman's thorough research and entertaining spin on the Norton's history make for a vintage that goes down smooth." -- T. Rees-Shapiro, Washington Post Book World

"Who knew a grape could generate so much history, so much commerce, so much entrancing narrative, so much splendid writing. Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine is as brilliantly successful a hybrid as its subject: combining the best characteristics of history and memoir, biography and travelogue, it is an utter delight."
--Robert Olen Butler, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain

"Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine is beautiful and eye-opening and you'll enjoy it as you would a bracing and wonderful wine. It's a mystery story, a history lesson, a personal journey between hard covers: a great, American vintage."
--Darin Strauss, author of Chang & Eng and More Than It Hurts You

"This book will move you in ways that might surprise you, for The Wild Vine is about much more than an obscure American grape; it's about heartbreak, determination, courage, and humanity. If in vino veritas, this may be the truest story ever told, and Todd Kliman tells it with grace and sensitivity."
--Don and Petie Kladstrup, authors of Wine and War

"A fascinating, well-written and researched cross-generational journey that follows the DNA of a single grape variety that I had never heard of before. I don't know if the Norton grape will make it as one of the great wines of the world, but its history, and the eccentric characters who carried its hope for a wine that could be grown and vinified in Virginia, of all places, makes for page-turning reading."
--Rex Pickett, author of Sideways

"Kliman tells the ups and downs of Norton with equal panache, pointing a bright light on grape hybrids, an important yet little-known part of the wine world, and introducing a cast of interesting characters along the way. While reading this book, I kept wishing that I had a bottle of Norton at my elbow."
--George M. Taber, author of Judgment of Paris

"A well-researched and fascinating story that reads like a novel. A true and highly entertaining American tale."
--Anthony Dias Blue, The Tasting Panel magazine, WCBS, KABC

"This is a terrific book. If it were a wine, it would be expressive but earthy, subtly spiced, with great structure and a long, lingering finish."
--Toby Young, of Top Chef

"Hold on for an entertaining and enlightening 400-year, transcontinental, trans-cultural investigation of the greatest wine you’ve never heard of. Todd Kliman squeezes a hell of a yarn from a grape."
--Daniel Evan Weiss, author of The Roaches Have No King and The Swine's Wedding

Tasty Tale That Hits All The Right Notes
By Bruce Loveitt
When I ordered this book through the, ahem, Vine Program, I expected a rather straightforward story about the history of a little-known American grape, the Norton, and its inventor, Dr. Daniel Norton. To Todd Kliman's credit, he gives us that story and a whole lot more. We learn about the failed attempts over a 200 year period to make a decent wine in America. Mostly it was a failure because people wanted to make wine using European grapes. But grapes are sensitive and don't usually do well in areas they are not native to. So growing French or Italian or Spanish grapes in Virginia, say, didn't work out very well. The vines are attacked by diseases, besides the fact that the weather and soil are different. But when Daniel Norton tinkered with some native varieties and invented the Norton, he came up with a winner. When the wine made from the Norton was young it tasted good, and when it aged it tasted even better. The grape eventually made its way out to Missouri which, back in the middle 1800's, was THE winemaking capital of the United States. (Nothing against Missouri, but that fact knocked me out!) As Mr. Kliman explains, after the transcontinental railroad was built California took off as the winemaking hotspot of the country, as the product could then be shipped quickly and easily, and the California climate was admirably suited to growing European vinifera grapes. California eclipsed Missouri quite rapidly, and Prohibition in the early 20th century pretty much finished off winemaking in the East and Midwest, as federal agents dug up and destroyed the vines. (Come to think of it, Mr. Kliman doesn't explain why Prohibition didn't finish off California as a winemaking state, but I'm guessing that would be a long story and a good topic for a different book!) All of this was interesting enough, but Mr. Kliman also weaves in the fascinating story of Jenni McCloud, a self-made multimillionaire who entered the winemaking business late and who wants to rescue the Norton grape from the obscurity it has fallen into. Ms. McCloud feels that several native American grapes can make outstanding wines and she bucks the trend of most American winemakers who stick to using famous European grapes, such as Chardonnay and Merlot. Her attitude is, why be the millionth person to make a Chardonnay or Merlot? Why not try to make good wines from some different, native grapes that have proven in the past that with hard work and patience they can compete in quality with European varieties? Many winemakers are scared to do this, because they are afraid people won't accept something different. But perhaps it's possible that if people are given something different to try they might develop a taste for it. Raising the book to an even higher level is the personal odyssey of Jenni McCloud. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say that completely disregarding the wine connection, her story is fascinating in-and-of-itself. The cherry on the whipped cream is the fact that Mr. Kliman writes wonderfully well. The prose is thoughtful, elegant and even beautiful in places. Sometimes you feel as though you are reading a really good novel, that's how fine the writing is. Highly recommended.

A fascinating story...
By Chambolle
How many times have you come home from a long hard day at the office and said to yourself, "What I need right now is a thick, rare, grilled steak, a big refreshing green salad, a fresh baguette and a darned good bottle of _________"?

Fill in the blank, and you might have said "Cabernet," or "Pinot Noir" or "Syrah"; possibly "Chambolle-Musigny" or "Cote Rotie" or "Barolo"; or any one of a hundred things. What you probably did not say was "Norton's Virginia Seedling," or just "Norton." That's likely because you haven't even HEARD of "Norton," the grape developed by Daniel Norton in Virginia in the first half of the 19th century. I'm not sure I had heard of it either. If I had, I'd long since forgotten about it, and I sure as heck had not ever tasted the stuff, much less given it a lot of thought. I'm not alone in that regard. I pulled out my well worn copy of Jancis Robinson's "Vines, Grapes & Wines," an extensive review of wine grape varietals from all over the world. In Robinson's ampelographic universe, the Norton merits a glancing mention in a one paragraph laundry list of "other red hybrids grown in the United States and occasionally encountered as varietals." No wonder "Norton" is not even a blip on my radar screen.

This book will fill that gap in your wine education, as it did mine, in an entertaining way. It will take you from the early settlements in Jamestown to Jefferson at Monticello. From brooding, melancholic Daniel Norton, for whom the grape is named, to the productive and prosperous Missouri viticultural scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (founded in large part on cultivation of Norton vines), to the Prohibition era that drove a stake in Missouri's viticultural heart. And finally, to the modern revival of Norton cultivation, with a detour here for one winemaker's "sexual reassignment surgery," there for the author's ailing father and teething toddler, and there yet again to other parts hither and yon.

It's a bit of a roller coaster ride, but an interesting one. I'll have to find a good bottle or two of reasonably mature Norton and give the varietal a try.

The book is not without its flaws, and thus four rather than five stars. The firm hand of a strong willed editor might have been helpful. Kliman's prose can at times be as dense as a barrel sample of Cornas and every bit as rough hewn. There are occasional forays into over the top, almost comical melodrama. Convoluted, overlong sentences that should have been divided into two, three or even four simpler and more direct and declarative ones are not uncommon.

But no matter. The book is a more than worthwhile read. It is obviously a labor of love. It also appears to be well-researched and ends with a substantial bibiliography, should you be inclined to delve further into the history and modern culture of "Norton's Virginia Seedling."

I say go for it.

Fascinating, Thoughtful Story of An American Grape
By Gregg Eldred
Is there such a thing as American wine from an American grape? Sure, the United States has its share of wineries; California, Oregon, Washington all produce excellent wines, equalling or surpassing their European counterparts. However, what they are growing are European grapes in America. Does America have a grape that is "native" and can produce a well regarded, drinkable wine? Actually, we do and we can. For example, Catawba. However, there is another grape that deserves attention, Norton.

You can be forgiven if you have never heard of the Norton grape. But if you live in Virginia or Missouri and do not know of this grape, I am saddened and disappointed. It is a part of your state's history. In fact, Missouri has designated the Norton as the State Grape.

The Norton takes center stage in Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine. Tracing the history of winemaking in the United States, Kliman takes the reader back in time to the time of the Jamestown settlers. One of their missions was to establish vineyards in the New World. Plantings of European vines were not suited to the climate, soil, or diseases of the new land and the efforts were in vain. However, that did not stop the settlers or those that arrived after them. Thomas Jefferson, who loved European wines, even tried his hand at growing grapes, but those efforts ended in failure. A contemporary of Jefferson, Dr. Daniel Norton, creates a hybrid grape that withstands the harsh climate and produces a very good, drinkable wine. Dr. Norton has succeeded where so many before him, even the learned Jefferson, have failed.

Dr. Norton's grape is added to the premier seed catalog of the time, where it is picked up by German immigrants in Missouri. An entire town, an entire industry is based on the Norton grape, which results in Missouri becoming the United States' leading producer of wine. Until the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad, which allowed California to become the top producer of wine. Then came Prohibition, which destroyed Missouri winemaking. At that point, the Norton disappears.

Interspersed with the history of the Norton grape in The Wild Vine, Kliman introduces Jenni McCloud, a Virginia winemaker whose life's mission is to educate the wine drinking public about the Norton and to return it to its rightful place at the top of American wines. Jenni is an excellent addition to the narrative, she is passionate, driven, eloquent, and, at times, vulgar. She is a woman not afraid of "conventional wisdom" or the work required to bring the gift of wine from the Norton. It is work that not many vintners are willing to tackle for many reasons. Ms. McCloud is a person with an attitude well suited for the Norton; unlike other wineries in America, she wants her Chrysalis Vineyard to produce the world's best Norton wines, not the 300th best Chardonnay, Cabernet or Merlot.

A thoughtful, well researched, thoroughly entertaining chronical on the Norton, Todd Kliman's The Wild Vine: A Forgotten Grape and the Untold Story of American Wine will introduce you to the history of a truly American grape, fascinating, interesting characters, and a new appreciation for wine, especially the Norton. It is a book that should be read by all wine lovers, it is an eye opening look at America and its rich, but brief (as compared to France, for example) history of viticulture. For all students of history, it reveals a little known, but very interesting, chapter in American history. Kliman's writing style will make you forget that you are reading a "history" book, it is more like a work from a popular mystery writer. It moves quickly, from the past to present day, making important and engaging stops along the way. Further, he provides the reader with fascinating, engaging, and delightful characters, which creates a much more intriguing tale. The Wild Vine is a book not to be passed over like some $5 bottle of wine. This is a thoughtful, complex, and pleasing book that will remain on your palate long after turning the last page.

Jenni McCloud has much more work to do, but she has converted this wine lover into a Norton proponent, even though I have not had the pleasure of experiencing a Norton wine. However, while I am attempting to correct that, it will not be easy. I called a very good, local wine shop shortly after finishing the early chapters, to acquire a Norton. "I'd like a wine from Virginia," I said. "I didn't know that Virginia had wineries," was the reply. I decided to take another tact. "I'd like a wine made from the Norton grape." "What's that?" came the response. Not to be easily dissuaded, I will patiently wait for them to locate and procure a few bottles. What I cannot wait for is to unleash the Norton on my unsuspecting friends. And to entertain them with the history contained within the bottle. A history not like any other vine.

I have recently purchased the Amazon Echo Dot and after that purchased this guide to learn more about it. I liked that this book is very clearly written and I could very well understand how to set it up and use. Simple and straight to the point.
By Max Rower
The Amazon Echo Dot is a cut-down but still impressive version of the Echo. If you want Alexa but don't want to pay a premium price, this is a great option. The best thing about the Amazon Dot is that it gets smarter every time you use it. I was hesitant to purchase the item at first because I am not into technology but part of me want to buy it too for my class. With the help of this guide, there would be no hesitation anymore. It covers the basic information how to use the item and everything is already stated there. Easy to understand. Good details. Simple and straight to the point.

Quicken: Magic Mirror
By Marian Blue
Quicken is easy if you have the magic mirror to walk through into this world. This "2012 The Official Guide" is the magic mirror that leads into comprehension of this software world. I'm not a trained math person, and the idea of setting up any sort of business/accounting system that would work is akin to believing I can fly if I just flap my arms fast enough. This author uses logic and clear language (leaving the math and software nerd elsewhere) so that the process of using Quicken is accessible by even me (not sure about cave women). In the past, I've hacked my way through Software programs because the books were not hackable; in this case, the book is faster!

Excellent Content
By stevemaximus
I took a shot on this book and am really glad I did. Last year I had purchased a book by a different author on Quicken 2011 and found it to be dry and unapproachable. The author of this book has made my experience with software books a thousand times better.

This book is easy to follow and does a good job of dealing with dry material in a very pleasant manner. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

A Helpful Book
By Sam in Tampa
Each year Quicken updates its' personal finance software. The same is true for the official guide. I buy the guide each year, because it's a very handy reference for dealing with questions I experience when using my Quicken software. There's just enough changes and new additions in Quicken to make a purchase of a new guide each year worthwhile. I recommend keeping a copy of the current guide on your bookshelf. And, you should buy the guide at Amazon, because they greatly discount the price.

What simple innovation brought billions in new investments to Fidelity? What basic misunderstanding was preventing Office Depot from achieving its growth potential? What surprising insights helped the Mayo Clinic better serve both doctors and patients?

The solution in each case was a focus on customer experience, the most powerful—and misunderstood—element of corporate strategy today.

Customer experience is, quite simply, how your customers perceive their every interaction with your company. It’s a fundamental business driver. Here’s proof: over a recent five-year period during which the S&P 500 was flat, a stock portfolio of customer experience leaders grew twenty-two percent.

In an age when customers have access to vast amounts of data about your company and its competitors, customer experience is the only sustainable source of competitive advantage. But how to excel at it?

Based on fourteen years of research by the customer experience leaders at Forrester Research, Outside In offers a complete roadmap to attaining the experience advantage. It starts with the concept of the Customer Experience Ecosystem—proof that the roots of customer experience problems lie not just with customer-facing employees like your sales staff, but with behind-the-scenes employees like accountants, lawyers, and programmers, as well as the policies, processes, and technologies that all your employees use every day. Identifying and solving these problems has the potential to dramatically increase sales and decrease costs.

Review

"Why read Outside In? Because a focus on customer experience and an outside-in perspective are the cornerstones of business success. The strongest client relationships are built on trust, mutual respect, and really listening to each other. Those are the kinds of relationships that can last a lifetime."
— Vanguard Chairman and CEO Bill McNabb

"This eye-opener gives you a comprehensive, need-to-know look at how smart companies achieve sustainable success in dealing with customers.  Hint:  It involves the entire organization, not just those on the 'front lines.' The GPS-like guidance provided here is invaluable."
— Steve Forbes, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief, Forbes

"Enjoyable, Easy, Meets Needs. This is Manning and Bodine’s Customer experience pyramid, listed in order of importance for the customer. Yes, it’s hard to make the changes needed to deliver on these promises. But there is a simple first step: read this book.
— Don Norman, Nielsen Norman Group, author of Living with Complexity

"Manning and Bodine understand that a good customer experience is actually less expensive to provide than a poor one and customers will pay more for a good one than for a bad one. Nothing drives profitability like an excellent customer experience does."
— Dan Hesse, CEO, Sprint

"I define customer centricity as simply ‘the one who pays you money placed at the center of everything you do.’ If you buy that definition, then buy this book, for Manning and Bodine provide a blueprint for doing just that. Following its prescriptions will yield enjoyable experiences for your customers by understanding them — from the outside in."
—  B. Joseph Pine II, co-author, The Experience Economy and Infinite Possibility: Creating Customer Value on the Digital Frontier

"Looking forward, healthcare organizations need to make patient experience part of their strategic plans. It’s as important as quality and safety. Manning and Bodine show why creating a great experience is important for any organization, and how to drive the change needed to make it a reality."

The ability to deliver a fast, effective and trustworthy customer experience is often the difference between success and failure. OUTSIDE IN details the tangible disciplines a company can master in order to differentiate itself from the competition through the customer experience."
— Kathleen Murphy, President, Personal Investing, Fidelity Investments

"Here’s a simple recommendation: if you have customers, you should read this book."
—800-CEO-READ

"CIOs who want to travel down that path [of success] but need a bit of guidance should look at Outside In…By looking closely at the problems customers experienced that led them to call customer service, some of these companies either slashed costs by billions of dollars or generated billions in new revenue."

A good book providing all the tools to help you manage your side of the experience
By Mark P. McDonald
Outside In is a solid book on the increasingly important subject of the customer experience. Harley Manning and Kerry Bodine provide a comprehensive view of all of the major aspects related to the importance, design and creation of compelling customer experiences. Overall this book advances the state of customer experience strategy, processes and approaches. Recommended if you do not know what customer experience means or your current customer experience is in need of transformation.

The author's six disciplines of a mature customer experience organization provide a basis for thebook. Each discipline is its own chapter covering

Strategy
Customer understanding
Design
Measurement
Governance
Culture

These disciplines, coupled with a part 1 that discusses the need and financial implications of poor customer experiences constitute the bulk of the book. The book introduces a number of tools from a definition of the customer journey, to the idea of a customer experience pyramid, ecosystem and four adoption levels of customer experience practices. These tools cover the full lifecycle of a customer experience program.

Overall the book represents a solid and in depth addition to the discussion of customer experience, its importance and design. It's a solid book as it reflects an understanding that builds on and extends current practice. Its not a book that will redefine what customer experience means, but it will give people without a definition a powerful resource to move them forward.

Strengths

Frequent, personal and illustrative case stories, rather than case studies, that bring the book's concepts to life. These appear throughout the book and come from companies we all want to learn more about from Fidelity Investments, Best Buy, USAA, Jet Blue, etc. The authors use these stories effectively.

Advocating customer observation and inquiry, as a critical part of the customer experience process is spot on and often underappreciated in organizations. Too many people are too willing to accept what they think rather than to go out and see what is really going on.

The book is comprehensive with the appropriate level of detail to give executives an idea of what it takes to develop and execute a customer experience strategy. The six disciplines of a mature customer experience and the details are very helpful.

The book recognizes that the customer experience involves an ecosystem - it takes a village to have a good experience. This observation and the techniques discussed to define that ecosystem are strengths of the book.

Challenges

The book defines the customer experience as `how your customers perceive their interactions with your company.' This definition, while accurate, creates a bias toward customer experiences based on usability, being easy to do business with and focus on what the company does as determining the experience. It's a subtle point but limiting the experience to interactions with your company provides a thin ledge to support inside out thinking.

The customer journey used in the book is good. But this lifecycle predominantly focuses on marketing, selling and purchase events as opposed to taking a broader view of the customer experience.

Through the book, there is an assumption that internal integration is the primary cause of a poor customer experience. It is, but its not the only cause, nor is improving integration the primary answer.

Finally the book is process heavy discussing the various disciplines, practices and tools involved in executing a customer experience strategy. That is a good thing, but much of this process is less informed by technology, the challenges and innovations it brings to the experience equation. It's an omission that re-enforces current practice when it could push the customer experience frontier.

"Outside In" Provides Inside Road Map to Customer Experience Success
By Robert Adams
Outside In is a great book for businesses and other organizations who want to understand and utilize the power of customer experience. If your company has any kind of interaction (digital, over-the-phone, face-to-face, or otherwise), you will benefit from applying the principles it contains to your business.

But that's not why I bought the book. I've taking a different perspective, that of a non-profit volunteer leader who wants to provide great GUEST services to our "customers." From my viewpoint, Outside In is an excellent guide to first introducing, and then providing a road map, for organizations who want to focus on providing a WOW! Guest experience program.

As a student of Guest Experiences, I was well aware of the book before its publication, reading a sample chapter and following the discussion by its authors Harley Manning and Kerry Bodine on the Forrester blog. I pre-ordered it from Amazon, and was delighted when it showed up one day after the book's release. After skimming the contents, I promptly canceled the rest of my day's appointments and read the book through.

I won't duplicate the table of contents here - that's what "Look Inside" is for. I'll just say that after one reading, I've began to go back through with a pen and highlighter. The book is marked up, notes are in the margin, and it looks like a highlighter has run wild.

It's that good - and a practical tool for your use.

I will be using this in my own organization, putting it to use in a consulting role, and referring it to all my clients. Want to understand the Guest (er, customer) experience? Order it today, put it into practice tomorrow.

There's "bad news" and there's "good news"
By Robert Morris
Development of the concept of customer-centrism predates Barbara Bund's business classic, The Outside-In Corporation: How to Build a Customer-Centric Organization for Breakthrough Results (2005). However, it was while reading that book that I gained a deep understanding and appreciation of the power of customer-centrism. Curiously, there are no references to Bund and her work in Outside In, co-authored by Harley Manning and Kerry Bodine. As Bund explains in the Preface, "The primary objective of this book is to help business managers use [her various] insights effectively in practice. It is to share the outside-in discipline -- to provide a road map for managers to follow in creating and leading outside-in corporations, even in organizations where the unfortunate inside-out perspective has prevailed in the past." (page xviii) Whereas Bund invokes the "road map" metaphor, Manning and Bodine focus on what they characterize as "the customer journey," based on experiences that occur on three levels: an experience that meets a customer's given need(s), is easy for the customer to complete, and is en enjoyable experience as well.

The best business books are research-driven and that is certainly true of this one, given the nature and extent of Forrester Research's resources. To their credit, Manning and Bodine also provide a wealth of information, insights, and counsel that are anchored in real-world situations. They insert dozens of micro-case studies throughout the narrative, sharing lessons from a diverse group of companies that include Barclaycard US, BBVA, Boeing, John Deere Financial, Ecosytem Maps, FedEx, Fidelity Charitable, Holiday Inn, Mayo Clinic, Vanguard, and Walgreens. As for what can be learned from large and complicated organizations such as these, the lessons are relevant to any organization, whatever its size and nature may be.

These are among the dozens of passages that caught my eye:

o What Natural Ecosystems Teach Us About Customer experience (pages38-39)
o How to Create a Customer Experience Ecosystem Map, Step by Step (47-49)
o The Six Essential Customer Experience Disciplines (66-69)
o What You Think You Know About Customers Is Probably Wrong (88-89)
o The Role of Cocreation in the [Customer Interaction] Design Process (113-114)
o The Customer Experience Measurement Framework (126-132)
o You Need to Build a Customer-centric Corporate Culture (153-159)
o The Four Adoption Levels of Customer Experience Practices (175-177)
o Why Do Companies Need a Chief Customer Officer? (187-188)
o Customer Experience Innovations Will Provide a Competitive Edge (214-221)

Manning and Bodine as well as Bund and countless others all agree that establishing and then sustaining strong relationships with customers is more difficult now than ever before because customers have more choices than ever before, are better informed than ever before, and not only expect but indeed [begin italics] demand [end italics] that the selection and purchase experience involve more, much more than a transaction to obtain a product or service. The challenge is not to hire people who "get it" insofar as customer interaction is concerned. The challenge, rather, is to establish and then strengthen a culture (i.e. an organizational ecosystem) that is customer-centric, indeed customer-driven at all levels and in all areas. Hence the importance of the six disciplines that Harley Manning and Kerry Bodine emphasize. Hence the importance, also, of having a framework such as the one they describe within which the disciplines ensure that interactions with customers are based on mutual respect and mutual trust.

I conclude by sharing some "bad news" and some "good news." First the bad news: Customer relationships have never been more vulnerable than they are now. What's the good news? Customer relationships have never been more vulnerable than they are now.
