About the Author
Professor John Watton began his career in industry working on the design of heat exchangers. He later entered University College Cardiff to study mechanical engineering. On completion of his PhD in fluidic control in 1969 he returned to industry as a Senior Systems Engineer working on the electrohydraulic control of guided pipe laying vehicles with Hudswell Badger Ltd, Leeds. Following a period as a Senior Lecturer in Systems Engineering and Control at Huddersfield Polytechnic, he joined Cardiff University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 1979. He was awarded his DSc (University of Wales) for contributions to fluid power in 1996. He also received the IMechE Bramah Medal in 2000 and a special award from the Japanese Fluid Power Society in 2005, both for outstanding contributions in fluid power. He was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1997 and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2007.

As in his bestselling The 48 Laws of Power, Greene puts a modern spin on wisdom that has stood the test of history, only this time his role model is Sun Tzu rather than Machiavelli. The argument is fairly standard: despite our most noble intentions, "aggressive impulses that are impossible to ignore or repress" make military combat a fitting metaphor for getting ahead in life. Greene's advice covers everything from steeling one's mind for battle to specific defensive and offensive tactics—notably, the final section on "dirty" warfare is one of the book's longest. Historical lessons are outlined and interpreted, with amplifying quotations crammed into the margins. Not all of the examples are drawn from the battlefield; in one section, Greene skips nimbly from Lyndon Johnson's tenacity to Julius Caesar's decisiveness, from Joan Crawford's refusal to compromise to Ted Williams's competitive drive. Alfred Hitchcock, he says, embodies "the detached-Buddha tactic" of appearing uninvolved while remaining in total control. The diversity of subject matter compensates for occasional lapses into stilted warriorese ("arm yourself with prudence, and never completely lay down your arms, not even for friends"). Greene and "producer" Joost Elffers are the Machiavellians who brought us The 48 Laws of Power (1998) and The Art of Seduction (2001), and their latest book similarly purports to distill the profundities of history for personal gain. Unapologetically premised on Hobbesian "all that is social is war" bromides, this account collects parables of strategic success and error from a diverse cast of military and nonmilitary historical figures. Its lessons are presented self-help-book style in chapters titled "Maneuver Them into Weakness" and "Seem to Work for the Interests of Others While Furthering Your Own" and flanked by a withering barrage of reiterative marginalia. Most books this cynical (and this repetitive) need a sense of humor to be readable, something this book apparently lacks. Its quasi-spiritual tone, though perhaps increasing its attractiveness to the impressionable, is also trying at times. But those readers who push through to the end (or flip ahead) will find a curiously contemporary section on modern terrorism cloaking a surprisingly specific commentary on al-Qaeda and antiterrorism strategy. More than just how to wage war

Among the other reviews here, there have been some comparisons between this book and the Art of War by Sun Tzu. I'd agree. Both are elegant and detailed instruction manuals on how to prepare yourself for conflict.

Once again, Green brings a tremendous body of research and historical insight to his writing, demonstrating the key points of each chapter through some of the greatest successes and mistakes from history.

But this isn't just a book about war. Greene repeatedly states that many of the strategies and tactics used to harden an individual for conflict (or conflict avoidance) apply equally well to business, politics and negotiation, and the examples come from everywhere from Hollywood to Ancient Rome.

The advantage this book has over the previous two is that his clarification of his strategies is more balanced and consistent. He goes vague less often here.

This book completes nicely Greene's cycle of historical self-improvement books: the first in how to woo others to your way of thinking, the second to deal with power structures, and the third for self-discipline and conflict resolution.

Stragtegies of War that Apply to Business and Life

Robert Greene is a prolific research and thinker who has made a habit out of writing masterpieces that explore all nuances of human behavior. In his latest tome he follows the same approach as in his previous bestsellers by leading off each chapter with a quick and easy to read summary that gives you the essence of the strategy and the stories that follow. Then he leads you on one fascinating historical excursion after another that brings each strategy to life through the exploits of some of histories most famous and notorious characters.

The beauty of his approach is that there is something for everyone in this book. You may read about a tactic that is highly amusing, but that you say to yourself, "I could never do that." Then in the next chapter you may say, "That's fits in with my personality. I can do that." That's how I felt about his strategies for laying back and appearing to not care, and about his strategy for taking an unassailable position.

A brief story in chapter 4 on developing a sense of extreme urgency was well worth the cost of the book to me. It talks about Fyodor Dostoevsky and how a change in his perspective on the value of life lead to a greater appreciation for every moment, and to an era of rampant productivity that continued until his death. Because I'm an author I spend a good part of every day writing and thinking about my work. After reading about Dostoevsky I immediately felt an even higher sense of purpose and motivation.

You really can't go wrong with this book. It is very entertaining and educational. Beyond that, you could pick up some sage, time-tested advice for improving both your business and your life. Bravo!

The Best And Most Current Book On Strategy For Your Business Or Your Life Available

Robert Greene's books are deep and they are for thinkers. If you want a breezy beach read or airplane read, this is not that book.

You'll read this book once, get to the last page and go back to page 1 and start reading again. There are literally hundreds of ideas in this book.

I especially like the way the author has made the book applicable to your life, the business or the battlefield.

As a former soldier, I deeply appreciate the detailed review of war strategies and found the book so compelling, I'm buying copies for all of my friends who are in the military and currently deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

If you only read one business or self improvement book this year, read this one. If you read three, read the author's other two books, The 48 Laws of Power and The Art of Seduction.

John Sammons (Huntington, WV) is an assistant professor at Marshall University teaching digital forensics, electronic discovery, and information security. He is a member of the FBI's West Virginia Cybercrime Task Force and founder and director of the Appalachian Institute of Digital Evidence (AIDE). John is a contract instructor for AccessData and is certified as both an instructor and an examiner.

make the best with what we got

I could not have picked a better novel with the airing of Downton Abbey (season 5). Just the perfect message to start the new year. Many people have been recommending me this beautiful novel as one of their favorite and definitely, it has reached that special place.

"The Remains of the Day" presents the personal account of an English butler, Stevens, after WWII, who has reached the fading phase of his career. Stevens relates his most memorable moments of his profession before the war with nostalgia yet with pride.

The narrative is multilayered as Stevens revisit his past during a short trip he undertakes to the English country. The nature description of the country along with his remembrance, even with no apparent transition, forms a well compact and linear narrative, making it lyrical. For an instance, it reminded me a little of "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" and "The Emigrants".The timeline stretches up to 6 days and, therefore, it is a short, quick read but profound.

Stevens explanation of what being an English butler really means is outstanding and full of wisdom. The emphasis of professionalism and how his duty of service is a vocation made me revisit my work experience and depicts my mistakes. All the lessons Stevens shared are lessons that are applicable in whatever field of career one may be.

The importance of "emotional restraint" (p.44) and how maintaining our "dignity" (p.45) at all times are virtues that should be part of our professional values. Stevens expertly demonstrates all the different manners in which dignity should be practiced. We also encountered a debate on the different definitions of dignity.

Another aspect that I greatly enjoyed was the importance of small acts or what we may say, which could produce a series of unforeseen events. Stevens is cautious, loyal and unexpectedly sensible. However, he also shed lights on his shortcomings for not having a balanced life and for not being more conscious, at the time, nor being more assertive in mistakes his employer committed. His strong focus on his duty of service and loyalty to Lord Darlington veiled his judgements rendering him indifferent, even an accomplice, in a way, of what was happening around him. As a watched the movie directed by James Ivory (1993), afterwords, the scope of his mistakes are more evident. Stevens was portrayed as annoying and he was easy to dislike. I was completely enraptured by his work ethics when I was reading the book.

Stevens will be one of those characters I will be thinking often along the year. I can definitely see myself re-reading this novel. I enjoyed it very much. I so wished it was longer. I recommend the audio which was narrated by one of my favorite narrator, Simon Pebble. I discovered him when I read "1984" by George Orwell.

Had to read it for class, would read again

This was one out of 3 novels I had to read for a Critical Theory English class in college. When I received the reading list, this seemed like the novel I would like the least. I was wrong. It is slow to start and slow to get interesting, but the pace of the book is pretty steady. The other two novels were Mrs Dalloway (which I had read before) and The Moonstone. Remains of the Day tied with The Moonstone in terms of books that I would read again. Toward the end of the class I had to choose between writing an easy essay on Mrs Dalloway or over Remains of the Day (which I was behind on the scheduled reading) and instead of taking the easy way, I finish this book in one night.
If you like books that are steady and may or may not have an unreliable narrator and characters, give this one a try. Ishiguro is a fantastic writer. Even if you do not like the characters or the plot, the writing and the author's voice is still great.

A Novel for the Pauser

I find that it is difficult to recommend “Remains” to people. To give an example: I do think a friend of mine would enjoy it, but I doubt he would get through the first two chapters before putting it down for good, as I know him not to stick with things if there is no immediate pay off.

“Remains” gives you very little, you have to do a lot for yourself; most of the main character's (Stevens) development is in the head of the reader, hence the title of my review. I found myself doing that hideously pretentious thing of lowering my kindle and look (thoughtfully) into the distance far too often during the reading, and still most of it only fell into place after finishing. A lot will depend on the reader's view on the ethics of intent and consequence.

I enjoy that, the wrestling with a thought or opinion until it makes sense. It is not dissimilar to the satisfaction of solving an equation.

The novel is written in first person and the reader have to sift everything Stevens says, not because he is lying to us, but because he is throughout the book struggling to reconcile the public view of his former employer with his own memories and opinions. Additionally he is troubled by the memories of the housekeeper from that time, with whom he now realises he might have had a future with.

In short; read it, it might be a novel for you.

Bit thin and "blank" - disappointing

I bought this book and reading the first chapter, I thought that "This book is okay - if small." I liked the way Ms Anderson wrote about her personal experience and most of the important topics Witches, Wiccans and other practitioners should know about, are included in the table of contents.
A word of caution, though: There are 10 Chapters, but the information on spells for example (11 pages and 3 lines on the 12th page) are pitiful and the rest of the book is hardly as substantial as the other reviews will let you to believe!
It has over 40 blank pages in the book (122 pages total), titled "Notes", "My Spells" and "My Rituals". Really, if one wants to make notes, write spells and rituals, one does it in a notebook or grammer (grimoire). There's no need to purchase a book (with limited space) for over $8! I did not find it "cute". Would much rather have seen more substance to the topics.
If you are looking for a Wicca 101 primer or a little additional extra reading on Wicca 101, this is the book for you.
I bought the following books, and found them to be more useful: Scott Cunningham (everything!), Al G Manning (Helping yourself with White Witchcraft), The Farrars (Spells and how they work) and even Silver Ravenwolf (To ride a silver broomstick, To stir a magick cauldron).

What a fantastic book, these authors really put their heart and soul into making sure the readers understood deploying SharePoint 2016. This book will not only help you understand the great new features of SharePoint 2016, but also help you truly grasp how to get a proper installation and configuration going for your business. There is no better book out for SharePoint 2016! Hands down the best technical read I have had in years! I enjoyed this book. People who are interested in SharePoint Server 2016 will most probably be interested in reading this book as this book covers deployment techniques, common best practices as well hybrid configuration howto’s.
Readers can gain in knowledge as real world scenarios are part in this book. One of the things that was especially interesting is that the authors covered SharePoint as it different stacks like Disaster Recovery, High Availability and Office Online Server. A lot of examples, PowerShell commands and personal touches are in each chapter. The book will become a reference covering all the courses that you need to be to become an IT professional.
It’s a 5-star book since I think it's important for anybody who is using SharePoint to know what the advantages as drawbacks are.
