I'm sure this is a wonderful Psychology book full of all of the lovely things the medical model has to offer BUT I didn't end up needing it. I didn't even open it. Although, if you are required by your professor, who is not as cool as mine was, you might want to consider renting this book from Amazon because it's pretty inexpensive compared to college prices. Also, the shipping is quick. Make sure you keep the box it comes in because when you're ready to return it, just print a shipping label (free!) and send it all back to Amazonland. Yes, it's really that easy.

Excellent primer in computational physics; needs more explanatory Java material

I used this book for a graduate computational Physics course. It provides an excellent overview of the modern practice of the subject (including even new methods like genetic programming!), and has the great strength of coming with sample codes. These codes allow the student to work with examples, to get a feel for how to structure programs, and provide useful templates for working through the exercises. The one downside of the text is that while it beings with an introduction to Java, it only described the language; it does not teach it. It would be much improved with an introduction to the basics needed to understand, modify, and use the Java programs on Pang's website. If you are using this book and you do not yet know Java, I recommend either finding someone to teach you what you need to know, or seeking out another text to teach you the basics of Java. As a computational physics resource, highly recommended.

Thorough intro but...

Altohough I am not a fan of Fortran by any means the book (now that many of the original errors are corrected) is extremely thorough and readable, but be aware this is not necessarily for the neophyte. One MUST have a good knowledge of numerical anlaysis since derivations of relevant formulas is scant. The book's strength lies in the breadth of topics covered, here you will not find the often included "sport physics" chapter as an introduction, rather you are introduced to the most common numerical methods used by scientists when an analytical soultion is not feasible. The book does deal with many problems found int physics from scattering to quantum mechancis and molecular modelling, Monte Carlo methods and some case studies of applied physics e.g the chapter including ground water dynamics. In the last chapters the author wisely introduces symbolic computing using Mathematica as an example and this is applauded as many of us are not willing to reinvent the wheel since there many excellent programs like Maple, MathCad, FemLab etc and an introduction to the like is good. He also discusses parallel computing and this is also welcome as it has gained more prevalent use in computational sciences.

A complaint, since the book claims by its title no less, that it is an introduction to computational physics, there should have been explict chapters on or at least a chapter on Sports Physics, Astronomy, Cellular Automata. That said the case studies on molecular dynamics, nuclear waste storage and chaos are great.

All in all, a solid text but one should be aware of the fact that the author (and to some extent, rightly so) assumes that the reader has a solid grasp of numerical analsyis, calculus and physics. Having said that if you need a really simple and thorough, ground up introduction and haven't taken the aforementioned courses then try Giordano's Computational Physics, be warned if you are like me and can barely tolerate Fortran (I grew up on C/C++) then the True Basic code snippets (for Mac) in Giordano's book will irritate you to no end!!

Good but more advanced than the title suggests

This book covers an enormous amount of material and is loaded with interesting examples, making it a far better read than other introductory books that never manage to get past basic mechanics.

There is, however, a downside to that. This book isn't well suited to people who are completely new to programming or to people who don't have a fairly extensive physics/math background going in. I have a PhD in physics and there are points in this book that leave me scratching my head. The code examples can be a bit confusing because there are almost no comments. The text explains the methods, but it'd be far easier to follow if the code made some attempt to be understandable on its own.

Highest of the High Deepest of the Deep

Having learned through all of mishna, tanach, and completing talmud bavli, i saved midrash rabbah for my next adventure. I'm 19 chapters in and i've found a "new love." I'm glad i saved it for now, after having a total familiarity with Torah learning. This Soncino translation is superb, a joy to read. The work itself, a thought provoking spiritual trip to the outer limits and beyond.

A delightful collection of immaginary Bible interpretations

Midrash Rabbah is one of many Midrashim, usually imaginative explanations of biblical books written frequently as parables to teach moral and religious lessons. It borrows freely from earlier works, such as the Yerushalmi [Jerusalem Talmud], Bereshith Rabbah, and Vayikra Rabbah as well as the Babylonian Talmud. We don’t know exactly when it was composed, but it may have been written in the tenth century. The following is a selection of some of its comments on chapter one of the biblical book Esther:
Rabbi Akiba was teaching his students when he saw they were falling asleep. He woke them by asking “How did Esther merit to reign over 127 provinces?” He answered his own question. “Let Esther the descendant of Sarah who lived 127 years come and reign over 127 provinces.”
Why did Vashti refuse to come to be viewed by her husband Ahasuerus’s guests? One answer in this Midrash is that she advised her husband: if the men see how beautiful I am they will try to kill you and take me for themselves. Ahasuerus ignored her advice and focused on her refusal to comply with his order. Who were the wise men from whom Ahasuerus asked for advice? They were Jews.
How come Ahasuerus's advisor Memucan gave his opinion first even though he was the most insignificant of his adisors? “From this we learn that an ignoramus always thrusts himself to the front.
How was Vashti punished? Ahasuerus “gave the order and they brought in her head on a platter.”

Great Rabbinic insight Scriptures

I am a Christian who realizes the great value in studying Torah and rabbinic liturature for it's deep ethical moral applications for life. This collection also gives great insight into how many of the sages interpreted Scripture during the apostolic/early church era and what many of the rabbinic debates were at that time. It helps glean insight into many concepts found in the New Testament. A great collection for any serious student of the bible.

PreS-Gr 3—When children open this book, they find themselves at Pettson's charming farm, complete with a red barn, an outhouse, a woodstove, a gramophone, a chicken coop, a neighbor's contrary bull, and a talking cat named Findus. Pettson is determined to make a birthday cake out of pancakes for the feline—one of three cakes he makes yearly for his impatient, opinionated, and sometimes lazy cat. The project is immediately derailed when the farmer realizes that he has no flour. Next, he is frustrated to discover that his bike has a flat tire, preventing him from riding to the store to buy some. The key to the shed, which contains the items needed to repair the bike, is at the bottom of the well, and the ladder to climb in through the shed skylight is being used by a mercurial bull as a pillow. Pettson's and Findus's antics to repair the bike are old-fashioned fun for kids, but downright mystifying for Pettson's neighbors, who think he is crazy. The wholesome story and quirky characters make this a great read-aloud. The illustrations may even be better than the story; Nordqvist uses saturated colors, clean lines, and a million tiny details to bring the story to life. What a great discovery!

I stumbled upon this author while reviewing a newsletter I get from a Russian online book store. The books looked great, but my kids are a long way away from being fluent in Russian and shipping was astronomical, so I decided to try Amazon instead. Presto! The books are available in English and this one was the most affordable.
Sven Nordqvist is apparently quite popular in Europe but unfortunately not well known here in the States. And what a shame that is. Among others, Nordqvist wrote the Findus and Pettson series of which this book is one. Also known as Pancake Pie, it's a story of the cat's birthday and of the obstacles he and his owner encounter while trying to prepare the birthday cake, which really is just a stack of pancakes. The story is good, but the illustrations make the book truly special. The cat in the green breeches, the kind farmer, all the little critters following them around, the whimsical Swedish countryside - they are great. The illustrations, highly detailed, double as look-and-finds. There's a tiny pier and a row boat on the bank of a puddle; an enormous boot abandoned in the forest by some giant, a little creature surfing on a raw egg...and more. Can't wait to get my hands on more of these books and read them with my boys. Highly recommend.

only recently discovered Sven Nordqvist through a friend of a friend. His stories are unique and entertaining, and the illustrations are some of the best I've seen--very detailed and interesting and engaging on every page.

Quirky delightful stories - and cool app!

We first checked out The Hat Hunt by Nordqvist. We (5 and 7 year olds) loved it - it was quirky and weird. We couldn't quite figure out what was going on. But I liked it so much I placed a request from our library system for this one (Birthday Cake.) While we were reading it they started screaming something excitedly. I eventually figured out they were telling me this: that the game app they play is the same as the book; they play maybe two or three different game apps on the Ipad (e.g. not many, my kids are not tech-ies) and this game is their favorite - they LOVE LOVE LOVE it - it's a very creative game where they have to build these quirky inventions that do funny things. The app utilizes the author's illustrations so all the inventions are right out of these quirky stories and all the little quirky odds and ends. But if you have kids this age and want them to play a clean, educational, interesting fun game, you might look up the app. Even I like to play this game with them - it's challenging and fun. I'm sorry I don't even know what it is called but I'm sure it's "find-able" - ha!

They were also excited to tell me that "The Hat" character is Pettson when he is an old many without hair because his nightgown's the same, this is the same, that's the same, etc. etc. So now, of course, we are working our way through all of the Nordqvist books available in the library.

One more thing - I was confused about the difference in the man and the cat's names until I read the reviews - I guess our library's version of the Fox Hunt has the British version so while I was reading it I kept trying to remember to say the names as we know them (Pettson and Findus) but it was a little frustrating.
