"This book chronicles his trip to pick up the trailer and his adventures restoring the 46-year old Airstream. Not only do we share with Tim the purchase and restoration of this classic trailer, but he guides us through choosing the right vintage trailer, how to inspect it, and how to restore or refurbish everything from bathtubs to brakes. The technical information is comprehensive with lots of pictures. Tim is a fabulous source of information and an entertaining writer, too."
-Escapees Magazine

Practical Knowledge for any Airstreamer or Air-dreamer
By David Gentile
I've been listening to author Tim Shephard's podcast for a few years now and he's great at presenting useful information in an entertaining way and he's done so in this new book, as well.

In this book he's collected the information you'll need to undertake a project of your own and gets down into the nitty-gritty details that can only come from someone who's done an actual renovation. Here he walks you through the essentials of choosing, searching for, buying, restoring and using a vintage Airstream. He shares the details of his personal, first-hand experiences with two vintage Airstreams, as well as the knowledge he's accumulated as a prominent member of the Airstream community. He points you toward resources and tells you how to avoid some of the pitfalls he and others have discovered.

I do wish the table of contents listed the chapters by name, not just number, to make it easier to go back and refer to a particular topic after finishing the book, cover to cover.

Overall this a great and entertaining resource that has reinvigorated my desire to finish my own Airstream project.

Amazing book for the (new/just get into it) 'Vintage Airstream' buyer- and owner, read my review!
By Bart-Man
What an amazing book! My wife and I are in the market for an Airstream, bigtime, believe me, it keeps me awake some nights! Hours and hours on the iPad.... After scrolling trough out the internet for about 6 months to a year I thought of buying a book or two because I lost my confidence a little bit, a book that would guide me in to the Airstream world from an insiders perspective, from an 'owners-perspective'. What better book could I ask for than this one, this is really a 'guide' to what- and what not regarding Vintage Airstream trailers. Just what I was looking for!
Literally a guide from looking for a masterpiece in someone 's backyard, to buying it, towing it home, to restoring it with TLC, to the maiden voyage.... I like that! Because we ALL want to know what it 's like, right...?
We are originally from Europe (Belgium) and moved to Southern Nevada a couple yrs ago, and have 3 young kids. Back in Europe we had a nice camping trailer, a typical large german model 'caravan', well build, lots of fun, all the options, sturdy build etc, but Airstreams where some sort of the dream for us and you know that 'one day...' saying became a reality for us, who does not like the Airstreams, specially coming from Western Europe?
But living in the US and having the chance to buy one was the easy part from now on because they are offered for sale all over the internet and enough choice in every (surrounding) state. The though part is picking the right one and that made me nervous the more I looked online. What seemed to be a quick buy would end up in buying this book and knowing what 's out there and what to expect.
Back in Europe we thought that all Airstreams where about the same, that was not the case, obviously because we live here now and start to know the inn 's and out 's!
The problem that I had, personally, by looking online for trailers is that i could NOT find a straight-guide-line in what trailer to buy for what price in what condition. It seems like prices, years and general condition are ALL over the place so I could not put a number out there expecting a couple trailers that I could choose from in the same era and pricing. Did not even knew about the poor floor/chassis quality over time? And expensive/hard to find parts like interior stuff, axles and some windows etc.
So I ended up questioning myself what the best deal is out there... Should I by a 1965 trailer in 'sit for years' condition for less than 5K and 'restore' it myself real quick or do we just go with a 10K 'ready to go trailer from the mid 80 's and upgrade it a little bit? Or spend some more money and go for a younger model like early 90 's, or why not go for a real-vintage 'restored' model from the 50 's or.... So many options!!!
You know, there was to much choice and the budget was all over the place! After reading this book I found out that buying a 60 's model and restore it is way to much work for me and my family (a one year restoration at an average of 15hrs per week?, and a 33K investment????). Heck no, specially with 3 kids and me traveling a lot and a busy job schedule....
So I learned a (potential expensive) lesson, so thank God for the 20 bucks that I invested in this book to learn a potential 40K lesson. I think we should go for a late 70 's - 80 's model, with small to minor renovations like changing carpet to Marmoleum instead of new carpet or click-wood or what ever 'just in case'. See? That 's something that I learned from the book! Gosh, the floor restoration that he did, makes me very nervous, imagine that in front of my house here, haha, and welding and replacing the wooden floors, the bumper, rivets, glass etc!!!! NO.... Don 't think so!
I would upgrade some comfort things myself like lightning, maybe a new AC unit, some small things left and right on the inside, and specially make it 'clean' to travel for us. We like our stuff clean!
I can even upgrade some appliances like a new stove or microwave and create an extra 'bunk-bed for the kids', buy some new mattresses, a 32" TV and other personal 'upgrades' and be done within a month in front of my own driveway, and be on the road for less than 3K to 5K.... See?
If needed I invest a couple extra $$$ to ask somebody else to polish it for us (learned that expensive & time consuming lesson in the book to). So overall, and that 's my personal opinion, and for me the reason why you should not 'consider' to buy this book, but just buy it! Please buy it, it 's so much value for the newbie in the magnificent world of Airstreaming!
I love it and it 's a great read, we learned a LOT. It took me a couple evenings to go trough it and I absolutely LOVE it!
If your in 't the market for an older Airstream than this book is for you, do not expect multiple color photo 's, it comes with a bunch of black/white photo 's (before & after) but that 's more than ok because you want to READ it. There 's enough pictures online after you read this book for references or ideas in general, but I 'm sure there 's not detailed restoration story 's like this besides this book.... Last but not least, I don 't know the author or anybody that 's connected to this book, so please understand my review and let me help you when you have questions and concerns about these trailers, I think this is a fair review that I wrote if you 'r in the market for a real 'lesson in Airstreaming'.
Anyway, I 'm more enthusiastic that ever in buying our first Airstream, I know what to look for now, where to look for (wheater conditions!), and I know what condition trailer to look for, and I even know (I think) what price to pay. Yes I will also take a set of 4 spare tires with me when I pick it up after I bought it some multiple miles away from my home!
Tim Shepard, you just did me a big favor with your Airstream Restoration Book, enjoy your beautiful restored trailer and who knows, we might meet one day down the road! Beer 's on me than, and the BBQ to, lol!

Helpful Guide to Living the Dream...
By Little Green Airstream
I am in the early stages of renovating a vintage Airstream trailer, and was surprised & excited to discover this book of Tim Shephard's experiences. Looking for resources to learn more about the Airstream community and advice on how to fix up my new old trailer, I'd already discovered the Vintage Airstream Podcast (the V.A.P.) that Tim co-hosts. And although I had learned a lot from listening to the first 25 (of the nearly 200) episodes of the podcast, I've been eager to read about the experience of restoring a single Airstream in another, more visual, format.

What's special about this book is that it is - as far as I can tell - a unique memoir & how-to manual documenting the entire process of researching, buying, repairing and enjoying a vintage Airstream trailer using modern methods & materials.

It is true that there are a number of blogs and forum sites on the topic of vintage Airstream restoration today. What separates this book in my mind from those other valuable resources is that it is written both with the humility & curiosity of a "beginner's mind," AND the retrospective experience of someone who's done it themselves and has learned a great deal from interviewing the pro's over the last several years.

"Restoring a Dream" benefits most from Tim's approachable, user-friendly writing style, and the careful but generous placement of photographs throughout. The story is told in a linear fashion so one can easily follow the process as it unfolded for Tim, or alternatively, flip to a specific stage of the restoration for quick reference. It will appeal equally to the casual reader looking for a good story with introductory technical information, and to those who want a reference at hand to make the arduous process of renovating a vintage trailer feel less daunting. And for those who have not yet bought an Airstream but are considering it, the purchase price of this book is a sound investment that may help to save you a considerable amount of time & money!

There are a small number of instances where information (and phrasing) is repeated, and I do believe that this first edition could benefit from another edit. But these repetitions are minor faults and will probably be forgivable to most casual readers. And those using the book as a technical reference may actually benefit from the emphasis, whether the author intended it or not. I also think that an index would be helpful, although the "Listener's Questions" section that Tim includes (excerpted from the V.A.P. FAQ's) is a fair alternative.

"Restoring a Dream" is wonderful either as a companion to the podcast or as a stand-alone read. For those interested in restoring or renovating a vintage Airstream of their own, I highly recommend checking out the podcast as well.

Ultimately, what comes through page after page is the joy that Tim has had in transforming himself and his vintage trailers, in the process creating many special moments with his friends & family. In the end, that's what it's all about.

As a fan of the V.A.P. and with the long road of renovation ahead of me, my wish for this book is that it is so successful that it inspires another how-to-oriented book (or video series?) in which Tim partners with Colin Hyde (a vintage Airstream restorer who co-hosts the podcast) and others, to share more anecdotes, how-to photos, and a few color plates...

What? A guy can dream, can't he?
