The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change Your Life, by Philip Zimbardo, John Boyd Ph.D.

Now in paperback, this breakthrough book on the new psychological science of time by one of the most influential living psychologists—the New York Times bestselling author of The Lucifer Effect—and his research partner launched on the front page of USA TODAY "Lifestyle" with a Time Survey and on CBS Morning Show.

This is the first paradox of time: Your attitudes toward time have a profound impact on your life and world, yet you seldom recognize it. Our goal is to help you reclaim yesterday, enjoy today, and master tomorrow with new ways of seeing and working with your past, present, and future.

Just as Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences permanently altered our understanding of intelligence and Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink gave us an appreciation for the adaptive unconscious, Philip Zimbardo and John Boyd’s new book changes the way we think about and experience time. It will give you new insights into how family conflicts can be resolved by ways to enhance your sexuality and sensuality, and mindsets for becoming more successful in business and happier in your life. Based on the latest psychological research, The Time Paradox is both a "big think" guide for living in the twenty-first century and one of those rare self-help books that really does have the power to improve lives.

From Publishers Weekly
Time is our most valuable possession: we are obsessed with schedules and multitasking to save time, say the authors of this insightful study of the importance of time in our lives. Yet people spend time less wisely than money. Zimbardo (The Lucifer Effect), professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford, and Boyd, research director for Yahoo!, draw on their two decades of research to explain why people devalue time. They blend scientific results into a straightforward narrative exploring various past-, present- and future-oriented ways of perceiving time and argue against becoming imprisoned or obsessed by any one of these. Zimbardo and Boyd have cogent insight into all of time's elements and show how they can be used for success, better health and greater fulfillment. For instance, understanding the role of time in investment can lead to wiser financial decisions, and a relationship will not work if one partner is focused on today's pleasure while the other wants to plan for the future. This is a compelling and practical primer (filled with quizzes and tests) on making every moment count. (Aug. 5)

Somewhat Dull, But Still Useful
By Camber
On the positive side, getting a handle on one's time perspectives isn't easy, but is vital to living well, and this is one of the few books which focuses on that topic. From that standpoint, I certainly benefitted from reading the book, and I suspect that I'll be ruminating about these ideas for quite some time (no pun intended).

To get a sense of your own current time perspectives, I highly recommend doing the online surveys found at [...] this is quicker and easier than completing the surveys by hand in the book.

But I can give this book only 3 stars because of some rather significant negatives:

- At 319 pages, the book is much too long for the content it offers. At most, it should be half that length. Ironically, the book asks for too much of the reader's time!

- The writing style is somewhat dull. It seems that the writers have wound up in a no man's land between good academic writing and good self-help writing. The result is neither academic rigor and density, nor self-help practical directness, but instead dull text which lacks both.

- Mostly significantly and surprisingly, the authors fail to adequately justify their proposed optimal time-perspective profile, and they fail to adequately provide detailed advice for how one can move towards the optimal profile. They even fail to adequately spell out the pitfalls of a suboptimal profile. For these reasons, the book is actually fairly shallow, despite the apparent academic qualifications of the authors and their long history of involvement with this subject.

Because this book at least introduces an important topic, I can hesitatingly recommend it. If you decide to read it, I suggest reading Part One at your normal pace, and then maybe skim through Part Two more quickly. This book might also work well in abridged audio format, since that would help cut out much of the fluff.

"Our ability to reconstruct the past, to interpret the present, and to construct the future gives us the power to be happy"
By Alexander N.
The authors, Drs. Philip Zimbardo and John Boyd have done a superb job in describing how people's time perspective can influence their behavior. The writing is clear and is accompanied by relevant research and many stories, descriptions, and histories. Dr. Zimbardo is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University and Dr. Boyd is a former student of Dr. Zimbardo, now working as research manager at Google.

People can have 3 "time perspectives"; they can be past-oriented, present oriented, or future-oriented. Based on their time orientation people behave differently. This conclusion is based on research done during the last few decades by various research scientists including Drs. Zimbardo and Boyd and is helpful because by understanding how people orient to time, we can partially predict their behavior. Thus people's time orientation can complement other models of personality development.

In order to figure out their time perspective, one can take two tests that have been developed by Dr. Zimbardo called the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) and the Transcendental-future Time Perspective Inventory (TFTPI). These tests are available at [...].

Obviously, we have a limited time on earth; so it is advantageous to make the best use of it. By gaining an insight into what type of time perspective we have, it is hoped that we become more efficient users of our time.

People who have different time perspective behave differently and we can make general statements about their thoughts, feelings, and behavior:

Past-oriented people:
1- They are generally more concerned with their past and seem to be able to distance themselves from the realities of the present or the future.
2- They usually tend to be traditional, religious, and conservative.
3- They have a stable sense of self.
4- They usually tend to be family- and group-oriented and are distrustful of strangers; thus they may have a tendency to be prejudiced.
5- They usually focus on their obligations and commitments whether personal or collective (i.e. family, cultural, or tribal obligations).
6- Rituals and myths play important roles in their lives.
7- They may have guilt as a dominant feeling.
8- They usually try to maintain the status quo and thus may not be progressive.
9- They usually do not take risks and are not adventurous.
10- Within their group, they usually tend to be dependent and cooperative rather than competitive.

Present-oriented people:
1- They tend to focus on the present and their current sensations, feelings, and concerns while ignoring commitments made in the past or for the future; thus they are more concerned with "what is" than "what was" or "what may be".
2- Their thinking is more concrete rather than abstract (i.e. one hundred dollar right now is much better than two hundred dollars in the future).
3- It is difficult for them to give up temptations or delay gratification and thus they are easily distracted from the performance of necessary current tasks and tend to be procrastinators.
4- They tend to concentrate on activities that bring pleasure and avoid pain.
5- Their knowledge or insight may not deter them from performing actions that may not be beneficial to them.
6- They are usually more sensation and novelty seekers, more aggressive, more depressed, less conscientious, and less emotionally stable. They have less concern for future consequences, less ego and impulse control, and less preference for consistency. They also tend to lie.
7- Usually people who are poor or uneducated tend to be present-oriented since they usually tend to focus on emergent needs of the present.
8- Since they are not good in abstract thinking, are more concerned with immediate gratification, and less concerned about the future, they usually tend to get low grades in school.
9- Because they are immediate pleasure seekers, they usually don't pay good attention to their health and can additionally abuse substances.
10- They are usually considered to be fun people to be around.

Future-oriented people:
1- They are more focused on their future than the present or the past; their thoughts are concerned with the future consequences of their present actions; they logically analyze various outcomes that may result from their action.
2- They are goal-oriented and can delay gratification and endure an unpleasant situation in order to achieve long-term goals. They pay attention to responsibility, liability, efficiency, distant payoffs, and tend to optimize future outcomes. Thus they can work hard and avoid temptations, distractions, waste of time to accomplish a goal. They usually tend to rehearse various future plans.
3- Since they are concerned about the future, they tend to save their money and resources.
4- They could be either cooperative or competitive depending on which action results in the best outcome.
5- They tend to be health-conscious in order to prevent future negative health outcomes.
6- They may be unable to enjoy fun activities due to the fear of wasting time.
7- They may have difficulty in intimate relationships since they thrive on control, predictability, and consistency, factors that may interfere with the freedom and spontaneity of relationships.
8- Although they usually have low anxiety levels, concern for the future may increase their anxiety. They usually tend to be workaholic, and have midlife crises.
9- They tend to be more conscientious, less aggressive, less depressed, more reward-dependent, less sensation seeker, more studious, more creative, and use less addictive drugs and alcohol.
10- They tend to have more self-esteem, energy, openness, ego-control, and grade-point average.

Time paradoxes:
Four main paradoxes are:
1- Time is one of the most powerful influences on our thoughts, feelings, and actions, yet we are usually totally unaware of the affect of time in our lives.
2- We can buy food, objects, space (i.e. land), but not time. Once we lose time, we lose it forever.
3- Each specific attitude toward time--or time perspective--is associated with numerous benefits, yet in excess each is associated with even greater costs.
4- Individual attitudes toward time are learned through personal experience, yet collectively attitudes toward time influence national destinies.

Time perspective subcategories:
The past and the present time perspectives each have two subcategories and the future perspective has one category as follows:
1- Past time perspective:
A. Past negative perspective
B. Past positive perspective
2- Present time perspective:
A. Present fatalistic perspective
B. Present hedonistic perspective
3- Future time perspective

Additionally, there is another category called transcendental future perspective.

Description of time-perspective subcategories:
1- Past-negative people: They have had sad, painful, or traumatic past experiences.
2- Past-positive people: They have had happy, pleasant, and enjoyable past experiences.
3- Present-fatalistic people: They believe that fate, not them, is in charge of their life. They live more passive lives since they don't believe in their personal power.
4- Present-hedonistic people: They like to enjoy life. They are impulsive, spontaneous, and risk-takers. They tend to lose themselves in the excitement of the moment and have passionate relationships.
5- Future-oriented people: See above.
6- Transcendental future people: They believe that their lives do not end at the end of their biological life. They are usually religious, have good impulse control, and are not aggressive. They think about future consequences based on the assumption that there is an afterlife.

Balance in time perspectives:
As the third time paradox states above, each time perspective has both beneficial and detrimental outcomes if they are practiced to an excess. Thus it is believed that having only one of the three time perspectives is not healthy and a balanced time perspective is more favorable. The authors suggest that for North American population, the combination of the following time perspective is ideal:
1- Low past negativism
2- High past positivism
3- Low present fatalism
4- High present hedonism
5- High futurism
6- Medium transcendental futurism

Things one can do to achieve a balance time perspective:
The good thing is that people with imbalanced time perspectives can reach a balance by changing their attitudes and behavior. For example, although people who have a negative past can not change their past, they can practice reframing their past by changing their attitude toward what happened. And people who want to become more future oriented can write down their goals, chart their progress, make to-do lists, and work toward long-term rewards. Many other suggestions are mentioned in the book to reach a balanced time perspective. Obviously changing one's time perspective requires much effort because one has to change deeply ingrained beliefs and habits. However, research shows that such a change is achievable and people who achieve it have happier lives. "Our ability to reconstruct the past, to interpret the present, and to construct the future gives us the power to be happy" (p. 257).

time paradox
By M. E. Mccaffrey
I doubt this book will change your life, but it is an interesting read all the same.

The authors discuss the way in which we find ourselves obsessed with time. Interestingly, they point out that 3 of the most common nouns in the English language involve time (namely time, year, and day.....among the other common nouns are person, way, thing, man, world, life, and hand).

Zimbardo and Boyd also discuss the way in which our time orientation guides our choices and overall orientation. He divides people into 7 time-related categories that basically boil down to those who are (1) past oriented (2) present oriented or (3) future oriented. Zimbardo offers up an anecdote involving pre-school aged children, and demonstrates how, even at a young age, our time orientation can guide our behavior. Basically the children are offered either (1) one treat now or (2) two treats later if they practice delayed gratification. When they were interviewed years later, the psychologists discovered that "the third of children who were able to control their impulses at age four scored 210 points higher on verbal and math SAT scores than the impulse-driven four year olds....The ability to delay gratification at age four is twice as good a predictor of later SAT score as IQ. Poor impulse control is also a better predictor of juvenile delinquency than IQ" (p. 216).

Overall, it was a good read. Somewhat pedantic at times but generally engaging.

Zimbardo's other book, The Lucifer Effect, is outstanding. Skip the first few chapters and go straight to his account of the Stanford Prison Experiment. It's the type of book that grabs your attention and really leaves you thinking.

Paradigm Shift: A History of The Three Principles, by George Pransky

This is a brief history in three parts of a new paradigm understanding called The Three Principles, and its dissemination, which was uncovered by Sydney Banks in the 1970s and very gradually and silently crept into the consciousness of perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, touching and changing lives worldwide.

It all began when one man, Sydney Banks, in one moment of time, had a profound experience of spiritual enlightenment. A small circle of people gathered around him on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia to listen to his wisdom. Within a few years two mental health professionals became profoundly touched by Syd's teachings, among them George Pransky. Part I of this book is an extensive interview with Dr. Pransky, who began to create an entirely new, inside-out psychological paradigm.

It began to spread little by little, one person at a time, solidly through individual insights and slowly began to infiltrate the fields of mental health, prevention, corrections, business, education, coaching and many more. It began to spread around the world. Part II is a historical chronology of what transpired. Part III consists of brief write-ups of a few of the important historical events that for an extended period of time changed mainstream systems.

How difficult it must have been to create an entirely new psychology from the formless, spiritual nature of which Syd Banks spoke, and for which he, himself, even struggled to find words! Furthermore, this became a completely new psychology--a true paradigm shift to the inside-out--which flew in the face of the traditional psychology accepted not only by the powers that be but by millions of people around the world who studied it and practice it. And all this from one man's enlightenment experience in one moment of time, which gradually rippled out affecting one person at a time, who then affected others, then others, changing lives along the way, and it still grows on into unimaginable futures.

About the Author:

Jack Pransky, Ph.D. is founder/director of the Center for Inside-Out Understanding and an internationally recognized trainer, coach, counselor and consultant who since 1992 has been studying and teaching "The Three Principles," an inside-out, spiritually-based model and approach. Dr. Pransky authored the books, Somebody Should Have Told Us! (2011/2006); Prevention from the Inside-Out (2003); Prevention: The Critical Need (2001/1991); Parenting from the Heart (2012/2000/1997); Modello: A Story of Hope for the Inner City and Beyond (2011/1998), and co-authored What Is a Thought? (A Thought is A Lot) children’s book and Healthy Thinking/Feeling/Doing from the Inside-Out prevention curriculum for middle school students (2000). Jack has worked in the field of prevention since 1968 in a wide variety of capacities. In 2001 his book, Modello received the Martin Luther King Storyteller's Award for the book best exemplifying King's vision of "the beloved community," and in 2004 Jack won the Vermont Prevention Pioneer's Award.

Was hoping something like this would come out
By Adult Reader in Calgary
I've been curious about the "true" story behind the Three Principles, and this book satisfied some of that curiosity. It's not exactly a "history", rather a transcript of an interview with the author's cousin, George Pransky. George Pransky was one of the pioneers in popularizing Sydney Banks' "Three Principles" philosophy, and he knew Banks and worked with him for years. In addition to the interview, there are historical summaries of major 3P-based initiatives and institutions, and a further index of publications.

The interview confirmed what I already suspected i.e. that Sydney Banks, while by no means perfect, was genuinely enlightened. He was sincere in his desire to help people realize their inner mental health, with little thought for personal gain from any of this. His speeches and his actions were congruent. You don't 'see' Banks much in the book, but enough I think for that to come across.

The book also introduced me to Elsie Spittle (what can I say? I'm fairly new to this stuff). I'd never seen or heard her before, and I've been spending the last couple of days rectifying that hideous oversight by reading her books and watching her YouTube videos. Spittle was a personal friend of Banks prior to his enlightenment experience, and she went on to become a leader in the Three Principles movement. Spittle seems like the real deal. The sense of serenity and wisdom she conveys in her talks actually rivals - maybe even exceeds (gasp!) - Banks himself (not that I'm keeping "enlightenment score"). I wasn't expecting that. It's good to know such a worthy successor has survived Banks and that such enlightenment or realization *can* be so effectively conveyed to another person.

But I digress. The book is useful and interesting. While it may not be the complete history I was hoping for, it was still worthwhile.

A Fascinating Book about a True Paradigm Shift in Mental Health
By Amy Johnson
This book is a fascinating look at the history of a paradigm that is sure to become the “new psychology”. I loved reading the history of this life-changing movement and am filled with hope for its future. So grateful to Syd Banks and everyone involved in sharing the truth, as well as to Jack Pransky for writing another fantastic and important book!

The best book on pediatric massage
By Martine Groeneveld, Author
Being a massage therapist working with children, this book is of extreme value to me. I've read many of the books published about pediatric massage and found this one the most resourceful for me. A good knowledge of the human body is a plus when reading this book, because it is a very in depth guide. I teach baby and child massage to parents and only recommend this book to parents who want to acquire more extensive knowledge, as for most parents I believe it's too much information. For other professionals working with children, it is a valuable addition to your personal library.

Marybetts is the best!
By M. Smith
Sorry I didn't review a few years ago when I bought the book and took her class, but better late than never right? This is a wonderful, intuitive, smart, common sense based approach to working on little ones. I've been a therapist for over 25 years now, and have learned to give up most of my books (there are just too many to hang onto, especially when I know I'll never look at them again after the first read, so I usually pass them on to other therapists) this book is a keeper though. Marybetts goes beyond the basics of massage for infants and children, with good common sense suggestions for safety and comfort but still leaves plenty of room for the individual therapist to put their own twists on, and use their own discretion and experience during the treatment. This book does not teach a robotic, step by step massage for pediatric massage. If you're looking for that, I would not suggest this book - but I also don't do or like that type of massage/bodywork treatment either. Instead I believe this book (and the class) provide a huge confidence boost for the seasoned professional that hasn't worked with infants or children much, or might be great for the new grad that is looking to expand their knowledge before heading out into the real world. An unexpected surprise, many of Marybetts' techniques and suggestions work beautifully for adults too - whether it's figuring out what to do with a very small adult, the highly apprehensive patient that needs a bit of babying, tailoring treatment for the developmentaly disabled or just working a nice unexpected comfort into a standard treatment, great ideas and suggestions for every day use. Good stuff! Highest recommendation!

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of You Are a Badass, an in-depth guide to making the kind of money you’ve only ever dreamed of.

You Are a Badass at Making Money is a refreshingly frank and entertaining step-by-step guide to overcoming the fears and stumbling blocks that have kept financial success out of reach, and to giving yourself the permission to make the kind of money you’ve never made before. You Are a Badass at Making Money goes in-depth on how powerful thoughts shape our income potential and the ways in which our bank accounts are mirrors for our bugaboos about money. Written with the same inimitable sass and blunt practicality that made You Are a Badass an indomitable bestseller, You Are a Badass at Making Money combines hilarious personal essays with life-changing, bite-size concepts that anyone can employ to unlock earning potential and get real results.

Best technical writing book ever.
By Kavka
I've seen a lot of (technical) writing books and most of them are just crap. You don't need a 50-page chapter to teach you how to put citations in your paper. You don't need double spaced text as if you are an elementary school student.

But this book is different. It help you focus on your your article/report/book at any level you desire from the overall organization to the proper selection of words. It gives you sophisticated advice that is actually useful and time tested.

I am an engineer, and I have used this book when writing my masters and PhD theses and a number of paper. I have used it when I wrote a patent application. My wife is a social scientist and she uses it for writing her thesis.

I have been using this book for about 10 years now, and I assure you it will improve your writing at every level. This book should be number one seller in its category.

Excellent explanation
By Minkyu Park
I bought this book by chance. But, I realized no other books cannot be compared with this book. other books say how I could rearrange the layout and order of my documents. This book teaches how I should write the sentences and paragraphs and the sections in scientific fields. This is very useful for nonnative speakers of english especially!

Exactly what most non-native technical writers need
By Gregor Hohpe
This book was recommended to me by a co-worker upon my request to have some help in teaching non-native writers avoid common mistakes. It's quite a tome, but the structure is excellent: the book moves from basic grammar and logic to writing specific types of documents. Most helpful to my colleagues have been chapters 25-30, which give many useful guidelines of structuring paragraphs and sentences. Almost each guideline is followed by an example from a very technical context, be it financial instruments or combustion engines.

The title appears out of print, but I would go for a used copy (that's what I did) as I have not seen another book quite like it.

Trapped: How the World Rescued 33 Miners from 2,000 Feet Below the Chilean Desert, by Marc Aronson

The amazing story of the trapped Chilean miners and their incredible rescue that Publishers Weekly calls “a riveting, in-depth recounting of the events that held the world rapt.”

In early August 2010, the unthinkable happened when a mine collapsed in Copiano, Chile, trapping 33 miners 2,000 feet below the surface. For sixty-nine days they lived on meager resources with increasingly poor air quality. When they were finally rescued, the world watched with rapt attention and rejoiced in the amazing spirit and determination of the miners. What could have been a terrible tragedy became an amazing story of survival.
In Trapped, Marc Aronson provides the backstory behind the rescue. By tracing the psychological, physical, and environmental factors surrounding the mission, Aronson highlights the amazing technology and helping hands that made it all possible. From the Argentinean soccer players that hoped to raise morale, to NASA volunteering their expertise to come up with a plan, there was no shortage of enterprising spirit when it came to saving lives. Readers will especially appreciate the eight pages of full-color photos, timeline, glossary, notes, and more.

The notion that history is always happening isn’t necessarily obvious to a kid. I remember have several moments of revelation when I was younger, realizing time and time again that the folks we studied in school were real. That they walked around like I did. History has a tendency to play out like a movie when you’re young. You might be moved but you wouldn’t necessarily be able to wrap your head around the notion that there but for the grace of God go I. To hammer this notion home it might be advisable to find moments in recent history that have been recorded for all of posterity. Like, say, the Chilean miner incident of 2010. A lot of kids (as of this review) would remember when that was in the news. Yet they might not think of that as a historical incident yet. Enter Trapped by Marc Aronson. Here we have a book that sheds some light on the story that hypnotized the world. With its natural tension and everyday heroes, Trapped is that rarest of nonfiction beasts: A contemporary work of historical fact that has you gripping the edge of your seat.

The collapse of a San Jose mine on August 5, 2010 wasn’t anything the world hadn’t seen before. Mines collapse all the time. It’s a dangerous occupation. The difference here, of course, was the fact that the 33 men trapped 2,300 feet underground were still alive. Suddenly the world was riveted by their story. Would the rescuers be able to find them? And even if they did, how would they get them out? Backmatter to this true tale includes brief biographies of each of the thirty-three miners, a Timeline, a Glossary of Names and Terms, a word on “The World of the Miner” by a miner, a note to students, Notes and Sources, a Bibliography, a list of interviewed subjects, Useful Websites, and an Index.

A good work of nonfiction for kids makes you want to keep reading, even when you know the outcome. When I pick up a book like Amelia Lost by Candace Fleming, I love that I feel like there may be a chance that they’ll find Ms. Earhardt this time. Similarly, when I read Trapped I have to feel like there’s a chance that they won’t rescue the miners this time. Indeed there were several moments when it really seemed as though the miners wouldn’t be found. Aronson parcels out this tension, knowing better than to fill the narrative with foreshadowing or some kind of false narrative technique. And like Fleming’s book he makes sure to tell two different stories at once. We are both with the miners and with the rescuers as the tale unfolds.

Mr. Aronson is a fan of context. It isn’t enough to know that this story takes place 2,000 feet below the Chilean Desert. He must show you how that desert was formed. And it isn’t enough to simply know that these men were farmers of items like copper. He’s inclined to give you the very history of copper itself, going so far as to tie it into scenes from The Lightning Thief or Harry Potter (sometimes inexplicably). For me, these sidenotes distracted from the larger (and more interesting) story. I know why Aronson has included them, but most of this information appears at the beginning of the book in a big lump. I would have preferred it to be integrated evenly throughout the text. That way a sentence like, “Today, the average American uses sixteen pounds of copper a year” will have the adequate oomph it deserves.

Aronson writes for both child and teen readers, and you’re never quite certain which he’ll write for next. In this particular case he’s made certain that this book would appeal to kids as well as those in the throes of adolescence. Of course, to do that he has to tiptoe around some interesting issues. I didn’t follow the disaster very closely when it was occurring back in 2010, but one thing I do remember is hearing that one of the miners had the awkward problem of being visited via the hole by both his wife and his mistress. You’ll find no mention of that fact in this book. There are points where the men resolve to become better people when they leave the mine, and there’s a point where Aronson condemns the sordid stories that the press indulged in at times, regarding the miners’ personal lives as nothing more than tabloid fodder. Nothing sordid makes it onto these pages, though. Later we read an account of the items that were lowered to the miners. Amongst the listed objects is “a picture of a pretty girl”. Call me dirty minded, but it is possible that picture was more than just that. It doesn’t matter, though. That’s not the story that’s being told here.

At the end of Trapped Aronson includes a section called “How I Wrote This Book: And what I learned that could be useful for students writing research reports (and a couple of last thoughts from men I interviewed). The section distinguishes nicely between original research and merely trolling the web. The book certainly works as an example of how to do research, but I suspect that the primary readers will be those kids eaten up by curiosity. How does a person survive for months under the ground? How do you fight off the claustrophobia? And how do you rescue someone if you can’t quite get a lock on where precisely they are? Trapped seeks to answer all these questions and, in doing so, satisfies a variety of different kinds of readers. If you’re looking for an account of recent history with a happy ending (no small feat no matter what the year) seek ye no further. This, as they say, is it.

Nonfiction the way it is meant to be—riveting, educational, and entertaining! Aronson not only does a fine job of chronicling both the physical and mental ordeals the Chilean miners faced, but explains how the problem occurred, provides historical background, and details the various participants in the rescue attempts. Even though we all watched it, to have it all come together and to grasp the magnitude of what was accomplished makes for fascinating reading! Graphics, diagrams, and photographs serve to enhance the storytelling. Appended are brief descriptions of the trapped miners, a timeline, a glossary of terms and names, an essay on mining, notes, and sources. Give this to students who don’t think they like nonfiction. Those that love history, geology, survival stories, scientific exploration, or even mythology will definitely enjoy it. Bibliography. Websites. Index.

Trapped: How the World Rescued 33 Miners from 2,000 Feet Below the Chilean Desert
Marc Aronson. S&S/Atheneum, $16.99 (144p) ISBN 978-1-4169-1397-9  Aronson marks the one-year anniversary of the collapse of a Chilean copper mine that entombed miners for more than two months with a riveting, in-depth recounting of the events that held the world rapt. His fluid narrative begins with a brief eyewitness account of the cave-in before contextualizing the disaster. Initial chapters cover mine layout and terminology, as well as prehistoric geology (and how it helped form Chile's Atacama Desert) and the mythology of the blacksmith god, Hephaistos, who "creates the tool the hero needs, and yet he is lame, ugly, a figure of fun." Aronson (Sugar Changed the World) smartly links this ancient pejorative attitude to contemporary ones toward mining despite reliance on its products, drawing on cultural connections between the underground world and hell, Hades, etc. Twelve short chapters with photos and diagrams keep the story well-paced as it alternates between above- and below-ground scenes, detailing the heroic efforts of the trapped men, their waiting families, and their rescuers, sometimes on an hour-by-hour basis. Extensive author and source notes, a bibliography, and suggested reading leave plenty for readers to explore. Ages 8–12.

“Leave it to Aronson…. Photographs, maps, diagrams and a wild range of literary references, from Merlin to Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and Hephaistos, enliven the volume. The author uses these familiar touch points to help tell a complicated story, blending them with such highly technical information as mining machinery to keep his narrative flowing.”

Masterful storytelling brings to life a story that most think they already know; the 33 miners trapped in a Chilean copper mine for 69 days in 2010. It was headline news for two months, with people glued to their televisions watching those final, dramatic rescues. It was a gripping story then, and Aronson manages to make it even more exciting, more inspirational, and more personal, all by gathering pieces of the puzzle and showing how they fit together. Explanations of how the Earth’s formation and plate tectonics created the copper lines that are so valuable to the world today are a critical beginning. Filling them in with a brief history of metalworking and mining leads readers to the small, out-of-the-way mine in the Atacama Desert region. From there the story becomes as intriguing and suspenseful as any work of fiction; the miners’ struggle to survive below ground is juxtaposed with the frenzy of the work aboveground by the mine officials, the government, and many others working to save the men. Detailed descriptions of the conditions that the miners endured and how they coped paint a vivid picture of just what an ordeal it was. The global response to the disaster was enormous, with organizations, governments, and individuals from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan offering resources and expertise to find a solution. Ample source notes, black-and-white photographs, websites, and a brief explanation of research methodology round out this must-have for any library.–Jody Kopple, Shady Hill School, Cambridge, MA

Trapped
Such more than just a chronicle of the Chilean mining disaster of 2010, Aronson’s well-researched and riveting book gives readers the sense that they’re in the San José copper mine alongside the “thirty-three men, who had disappeared, eaten by the rock” as he describes their physical hardships (scarce rations, no medicines, ninety-degree temperatures) and emotional turmoil (“This hell is killing me”). He also details, in depth, the goings-on topside—the incredible rescue effort that included “everyone from experts on undersea and underground to outer space.” Another strong point of Aronson’s book is the helpful background info he provides: he delves into forty-million-year-old geological history (“the great dance of the shifting continents”) and discusses the economic conditions that drew men to San José, a mine with no escape routes, “where a man can get work if he doesn’t ask too many questions.” Peppered with engaging quotes, the text is fluid and attention-grabbing. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams are included. Lengthy end matter features a description of each miner, a timeline (unseen), a glossary, source notes, a bibliography, an interview list, websites, an index (unseen), a brief essay about “The World of the Miner,” and an author’s note titled “How I Wrote This Book.” tanya d. auger

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Aronson, Marc Trapped: How the World Rescued 33 Miners from 2,000 Feet Below the Chilean Desert.
Only the most news-averse adolescents would have failed to note last year’s disaster at the San Jose copper mine in northern Chile and its nail-biting aftermath in which teams of rescue workers struggled to make contact with the trapped miners, sustain them physically and emotionally, and finally devise a system to bring them safely to the surface. Here Aronson reassembles the events into a single comprehensive report, which not only covers the rescue effort but also offers background on sketchy mining practices and even the regional geology that gives birth to the veins of copper that makes its way into manufactured goods in industrialized nations. There’s something here to rivet just about anyone, from gearheads who follow the approaches to drilling, to humanists who empathize with the trapped men and their anxious families, to nascent activists who recognize that behind the heroics lies a corrupt, neglectful system of mine operation that endangers workers to maximize profit. Students using this title as a foundation for a written report will appreciate the annotated sourcing, timeline, index, glossary, and perhaps most important, the motherlode of useful websites. Teachers and librarians might also want to direct their students’ attention to Aronson’s appended essay on how he conducted his own Internet-based research. Black-and-white photos and a color insert will be included in the final copy.

Great for middle school readers
By Maggie Knapp
A fast and riveting read (about 70 pages of text, 15 pages of photos and 35 pages of helpful notes, vocabulary, sources etc.) about (just as the subtitle tells us): How the World Rescued 33 Miners from 2,000 Feet Below the Chilean Desert. Aronson deftly handles a complicated story in a way that middle grade(5th and up)readers will understand. He shows respect and compassion for everyone involved, not delving too deep, not focusing overly much on what/who failed and not trying to assign legal blame. He highlights the courage of the miners and the hard work of all who were involved in the rescue, as well as the geographic and geologic backstory of mining and that particular mine. My only comment (nothing like an armchair quarterback!) is that I felt a teensy bit disappointed that the hours of actual, physical rescue are covered in a few paragraphs acknowledging hugs and "rising slowly" and "all goes smoothly" and not much more. I wanted a page or two that more clearly explained the capsule and what it was like to ride in it. I wanted to hear the joyous greetings of the families...the words of the miners as they emerged. Maybe that was too personal to include, but after hearing so much about their life underground and the rescuers' valiant efforts to save them, I wanted more details and some photos of the capsule (there is a line drawing.) Perhaps copyright issues or privacy issues were in the way. Overall a great choice for MS readers with a love of adventure or a scientific bent towards what happens in a mine.
