Monte Francis is a journalist and writer who has covered several high-profile murder trials. He has received two Emmy Awards for his television news reports and several awards for his news writing from the Associated Press. This is his first book.

Literally senseless

Someday maybe our descendants will look back at this as a time before we had any idea about how people could just have an adjustment to their brains and make the evil impossible. The concept of instead tolerating destructive behavior and then actually exacting the death penalty in retribution will surely seem barbaric. But for now we're still stuck trying to make sense of extreme sexual manipulation, incest, social isolation of a family and a murder-suicide pact. It's not that we haven't seen these things before, it's just that no matter how much research and observation we do, it never seems to make any more sense.
It's not clear to me how well this case has actually been explored. For whatever reason, it never achieved the high profile status the gruesome and sensational details might have fed the national media. I can't help but suspect that the race of the victims and the low socio-economic status of the family may have been major factors there. The author has done a good job of pulling together his reporting on the case for this book, but it is repetitive at times and could benefit from tighter editing. All in all, it is a worthy and serious example of the true crime genre.

Stunningly evil!

It's hard to believe that someone like Marcus Wesson was able to perpetuate his evil for so long and get away with it!
All those lives destroyed and ruined due to his mental illness. Hard to believe no one intervened even after the older daughters were working with the public.
Just shows how manipulative, evil, and cunning people manifest themselves into other people's lives...

An interesting recounting of a horrible series of crimes. Marcus is a very sick man and certainly deserved the death penalty. He is almost illiterate if the quotations from his manifesto are accurate.
