World Trade Since 1431: Geography, Technology, and Capitalism, by Peter J. Hugill

Equipped with reliable maps and instruments for open-ocean navigation and highly seaworthy, three-masted, cannon-armed ships, Portugal dominated the Atlantic trade routes―until the diffusion of Portuguese technologies to wealthier polities made Holland the eventual successor, owing to its geographic position and its immense commercial fleet. It is precisely this interplay of technology and geography, argues Peter J. Hugill, that has guided the evolution of the modern global capitalistic system. Tracing the relationship between technology and economy over the past 550 years, Hugill finds that the nations that developed and marketed new technologies best were the nations that rose to world power, while those that held onto outdated technologies fell behind. Moreover, he argues, major changes in transportation and communication technologies actually constituted the moments of transformation from one world economy to another.

Review

A magnificent work, Braudelian in its conception, scope, and attention to detail... A delight.

(Progress in Human Geography.)

A first-rate historical study in the genre of world history... Combines geography with the social sciences in skillful fashion. It is lucidly written and will appeal to the specialist and general reader.

(Virginia Quarterly Review)

Hugill provides a refreshingly long historical sweep in arguing that transportation technologies have been the key to success in world trade... A wealth of historical and technicaldetail.

(Geonomics.)

History Gem
By Douglass W List
I've been looking for this book for over ten years. Finally stumbled on it last night browsing on Amazon for something else. It is one of my top ten history reads of all time, but, not being able to remember either the title or the author from when I read it back in 1996 or so, and having lent it to some miscreant who did not return it!, I've for years been unable to pass it along to others. Bravo for the power of browsing on Amazon!

Peter Hugell provides in this book a fascinating look at how technical and economic innovation have shaped world history. Fifteen years after reading the book, I still find myself using his models in conversations about current as well as historic events. Among other things, he examines the interplay between "hardware" and "software" throughout history. A new ship design provides a "hardware" advance that allows one nation to secure trade advantages over another. The ascendency of the Dutch in world trade was aided by their "invention" of a way to FINANCE the building of a ship before anyone knew who the buyer would be - building ships "on spec". The combination of better ships and a way to finance building an entire fleet of them faster than anyone else propelled the Dutch to world leadership. This is but one example of how hardware and software innovations work together to make history. Debuting in 1995, this book was way ahead of its time if one looks today at the number of history books finally focusing on the underlying economic forces - especially trade - that drive history. Hugell shows how these economics forces follow, like day after night, hardware and software innovations that create fundamental change in the economic equilibrium.

If you want a book on history that will really make you THINK, this is a read you should not miss.

Will make you see the world in new ways
By Christopher Gunderson
This is an amazing piece of scholarship. I stumbled on it in a used book store. I had never heard of it before and am fairly well read in this sort of thing. It is an exhaustive account of the emergence and development of the system of world trade beginning with the initial Portuguese expansion into the Atlantic in the early 15th century up to the near-present. What makes the book so compelling is its detailed and wll thought out explanations of how technological innovations, especially in transport and communications, fed social innovations that in turn fueled the further expansion of the North Atlantic centered capitalist world system that came to dominate and remake the planet. The book is an excellent complement to the works of Immanuel Wallerstein, Fernand Braudel, Giovanni Arrighi other historians of the longue duree.
