From Publishers Weekly
The 1971 slaying in New Jersey of five members of his family went unresolved for 19 years until the apprehension and sentencing of John List to five consecutive life terms. List, a Michigan native raised in a German-American community, was the only son of parents who were relatively old when he was born. Growing up isolated from other children and furiously overprotected by his mother, he was also indoctrinated into the most conservative, rigid sort of Lutheranism. As a consequence, argue novelist Benford and psychologist Johnson, he turned into an obsessive-compulsive with no ability to deal with people, a defect that led to failure in job after job. He married a widow who had syphilis (but hid that fact) and became an alcoholic. Apparently believing that he was doing what was best for them, List killed his wife, their three children and her mother. He then disappeared, assuming another identity, but was identified through the TV program America's Most Wanted . A full-length and riveting portrait of an anomalous killer.

From Library Journal
John Emil List truly loved his family. He made sure they lived in one of the nicest houses in the neighborhood. He worked extra long hours at his accountant's position so that he made enough money to buy nice things for his mother, wife, and three children. He attended his Lutheran church and insisted his family be as devout Christians as he was. So, what else could he do when he lost his job and his life was in shambles? How could he ask his family to face the humiliation of going on welfare? He just couldn't. So he shot them all. From behind, so they wouldn't have to witness what he had done. Then he disappeared for 18 years. Ironically, his favorite TV show, America's Most Wanted , helped capture him by showing a bust of what he could look like 18 years after the crime. Benford and Johnson do an excellent job of illuminating a dark personality and explaining the why of List's need to eliminate his whole family. For true-crime collections. From Kirkus Reviews
Chilling account of the multiple murders that shocked newspaper readers and TV viewers in 1971, and stunned them 18 years later when the killer was at last caught through the auspices of a popular TV program. As Benford (author of several quiz books) and Johnson ably explain, the mother, wife, and three children of John Emil List were found shot to death and carefully laid out in their unheated Westfield, N.J., home. The only family member missing was List himself--who admitted his guilt in a letter to his Lutheran pastor. Reclusive, deeply religious, and seemingly devoted to his family, List was an unlikely mass murderer, with an unlikely reason for gunning down his family: Facing financial difficulties and fearing that his wife and children were falling away from religion, List decided to assure their eternal salvation by murdering them. He then ran off to start a new life as one Robert Clark, remarried, and was caught nearly two decades later when his picture was broadcast on TV's America's Most Wanted. Drawing on interviews with List neighbors and law officers, the authors have uncovered some astonishing sidelights to the case. List's wife, Helen, for instance, was apparently dying of tertiary syphilis; and there is evidence that daughter Patricia was dabbling in witchcraft. Well-organized and fast-paced, with convincing insights into the minds of List and his victims: a true-crime success. (Eight-page photo insert--not seen.) -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. He mowed his lawn in a shirt and tie
By Amazon Customer
While I have read quite a bit about John List in the past, and I thought I knew the story fairly well, this book really brought the picture of a couple in crisis into sharp focus. Here are all the details of the "perfect storm" in List's life, leading him to conclude that the only was out was to murder his family. Chief among the issues was List's Obsessive Compulsive Personality disorder, causing him to be more preoccupied with some idea of perfection than getting a job done, hence his inability to keep a job and downward financial spiral. Apparently although he had an IQ of 140 and a Master's degree in Accounting, his people skills were utterly dismal. This was a different era and his employers at first were willing to say he had left voluntarily for a better position, but that excuse eventually stopped working . He ended up selling Life Insurance on commission and with zero charisma as a salesman, he failed miserably.

List was too humorless and rigid to socialize and was perceived by others as odd, mowing his lawn in a shirt and tie. A very religious man, when the family first moved in, List did invite the Pastor and his wife over, which was the first and last time they were ever in his home. In an attempt to please his wife, he did order some erotic videos, and had them sent to an anonymous PO box. It probably seemed to John List that society was rapidly changing at the time, which it was, and the conservatives like him were being left behind.

The level of detail here really helped me understand the case for the first time . I couldn't put it down, This is all the John List you need!

Presents a chilling tell with objective information
By A Customer
I purchased the book after seeing a story about these murders on a TV news program. I was prepared to think John List is just a horrible, cold-hearted monster. The authors do not sugar coat the facts. However, they do present the murderer as a multi-faceted individual whose life spun out of control. I wouldn't call the book spell-binding or riveting. It is easy to read and interesting. I appreciated the lack of sensationalism and bias. A good story about a tragic event.
